How to Become a Personal Beauty Makeup Artist

You love makeup. You love learning about new trends and trying the latest techniques on yourself and your friends. What if you want to turn your love for makeup into a career? The good news is there are a number of career options for makeup artists. Once you learn the tips and tricks of the trade and master the skills involved, you’ll be on your way to starting a beautiful new career. Here are some tips to get you there.

Practice makes perfect

When it comes to makeup artistry, nothing replaces hands-on, real-world experience. Practice different techniques on your friends, your family, people with different face shapes, skin types, ages, etc. If you can get a job at a makeup counter or store where you can practice your craft, do it.

Do online research

Study different makeup artists and determine who your role models are. Check out beauty blogs and videos to see what looks and trends you like most, what styles of makeup you prefer, and work on developing your own signature style.

Get the proper training

If you are serious about becoming a professional makeup artist, consider different cosmetology, makeup or skincare programs, do your homework, and determine which one is right for you. At Shore Beauty School, our cosmetology program will teach you all about hair, skincare, nails and makeup! Or you can enroll in our skincare program and learn facial massage and treatments, makeup techniques and body treatments. Our hands-on beauty clinic will let you get all the practice you need on real clients, and our expert instructors can teach you way more than you can ever learn on a YouTube video.

Build a portfolio

Once you have some experience doing makeup, it’s time to build a portfolio so you can show potential employers and clients what you can do. Gather some awesome, well-lit photos of your best work, and upload them to your online portfolio so you can share your talents with the world.

Market yourself

You can also share the link to your portfolio, stunning photos, rave reviews, special promos and discounted rates on social media to spread the word about your new makeup venture. When you are first starting out, take whatever jobs come your way to build up your experience, gain references and referrals, and build a clientele.

Quick and Easy Hairstyles for the Holidays

Quick and Easy Hairstyles for the Holidays

Whether you’re headed to your holiday work party, a big dinner with the family, or a romantic evening for two, you want to look fabulous; but honestly, who has time for a complicated updo or a trip to the salon for a blow-out? We’ve got you covered! Here are some quick and easy hairstyles that are perfect for all of your festive holiday activities. Cheers to that!

Natural Curls

If you have natural curls, kinks, or spirals, lucky you! Don’t fight those curls; play them up. Start preparing your look in the shower with a leave-in curl defining cream/conditioner, comb in while wet (using a wide toothed comb), squish, and then wrap in a soft t-shirt or hair towel to dry. Don’t rub! If you have the time to let your hair dry naturally, do. If not, use a diffuser on your hair dryer and avoid brushing. Result, your natural curls will shine, not frizz!

Half-Up Waves

For mid-length and longer hair, you can change things up by pulling the top section of your hair into a high ponytail, and use a large-barrel curling iron to create loose waves throughout your hair. Pull some hair, light and thin, out in front of each ear for a slightly more relaxed, playful look.

Coiled Topknot

Who doesn’t love a topknot? It’s fast, easy, and actually works better when your hair is a little dirty! Gather all of your hair into a high pony at the top of your head and secure with an elastic. Then coil your ponytail (you can even braid it if you want to get fancy) and wrap the coil around the elastic. Secure with bobby pins or another elastic, and use a little dab of hair oil to tame any frizz. Add a sparkly headband to be festive!

Slicked-Back Pony or Braid

The long, slicked-back ponytail is a trend that is hugely popular. It looks sleek and sophisticated, and is as easy as 1-2-3. 1. Pull up your hair into a high ponytail. 2. Slick down any flyaways with a hair serum, oil or gel as you go. 3. Secure with an elastic. To enhance the look, add in some extensions for extra length and drama. You can also do this style with a braid.

Sleek & Straight

Finally, you can keep it simple and let your hair down. Starting on damp hair, make a center part. Apply a heat protectant or straightening balm, and blow dry your hair using a paddle brush. Follow by flat-ironing your hair, and top it off with a little oil or smoothing serum for shiny, smooth holiday hair.
