How to Become a Hairstylist and Open a Salon

Become a hairstylist and open a salon

If you’ve dreamed of becoming a hairstylist and someday owning your own salon, it’s time to put yourself on the path towards making that dream come true. Working as a hairstylist and helping people to look and feel their best can be a very rewarding career, and, if you have an entrepreneurial spirit, owning your own salon can be an exciting way to take your career to the next level – giving you freedom and control over your own business.

Get the Training You Need

To start with, you’ll need to gain the skills and knowledge you’ll need to succeed, by enrolling in a Cosmetology & Hairstyling program through an accredited school like Shore Beauty School. Shore also has a renowned beauty clinic where you can gain real-world experience, further develop your technical skills, speed, confidence, and professionalism by working with actual clients.

Learn Business Fundamentals

Shore also offers Shear Success Business Fundamentals, a supplemental program that teaches you the foundation of building a business, including creating a book of clientele, networking, marketing, client management, and ways to maximize your earnings.

Make a Business Plan

Once you’ve graduated and have passed your licensing exam, you may want to start working at a salon to gain some experience before starting out on your own. When you’re ready to start your own business, the first step is always to write a solid business plan, as well as considering costs (how much you will need to get started, how much to charge, how much business you will need to do to keep the salon running and profitable). You may also need to consider taking out a small business loan or looking for an investor to help you get started. If done well, your business plan can help you secure a loan or investor.

Salon Start-up Checklist

Here are some of the key steps you’ll need to consider when opening your own hair salon. You’ll need to:

  • Choose your legal structure.
  • Register your salon business and its name.
  • Choose a location to rent or buy.
  • Get a license to operate.
  • Get insurance.
  • Choose suppliers.
  • Purchase the equipment, salon furniture, and supplies you’ll need.
  • Hire your staff (receptionist, stylists, nail techs, etc.).
  • Train your new hires.
  • Start booking and marketing.

It can be a lot of work, but if you are passionate about owning your own business and love the beauty industry, it can definitely pay off.

How to Find the Right Beauty School for You

finding a beauty school that's right for you

If you love being creative, have a passion for beauty, and enjoy making people look and feel their best, then a career in the beauty industry may be perfect for you. But, with so many options out there, how do you find the right beauty school to give you the training and hands-on experience you need to succeed?

Pick Your Profession

To discover the school that is right for you, first, consider what direction you want to take. Would you like to become a hairdresser, a barber, a nail tech, or a skincare specialist? Not sure? You may want to consider a comprehensive cosmetology degree to keep your options open.

Narrow Down Your Choices

Next, since the beauty profession requires hands-on learning, you’ll want to make a list of beauty schools that are in your area, unless you are willing to relocate, and offer the programs you are interested in. Additionally, look for a school that has a full-service beauty clinic where you can hone your skills on real customers. Shore Beauty School is conveniently located in a modern, technology-enabled campus in Egg Harbor, New Jersey.

Visit Your Top Schools

Once you have a manageable list of your top picks, schedule a tour at each school. There is nothing quite like seeing a school in person to help you get a feel for the place. Would you fit in here? Can you envision yourself in this environment? Would this place help you reach your career goals?

Top Questions to Ask During Your Beauty School Tour

When you’re on your tour, don’t hesitate to ask a lot of questions. Choosing a beauty school is a big decision and you want to be well-informed. Here is a list of questions to get you started:

  • Is this beauty school accredited?
  • How long has the school been open?
  • Are there students or graduates you can talk to about the school or specific programs?
  • What is the graduation rate?
  • Do they offer flexible class schedules?
  • How long will it take to get your degree?
  • Does the school offer financial aid?
  • Does the campus look clean and professional?
  • Do the students seem happy?
  • Does the school offer support after graduation or help with job placement?

The Latest Fall Beauty Trends

fall makeup trends

Yay for fall! It’s finally cool enough to put on a cute new sweater, and try the latest makeup trends without having them sweat off your face. As usual, as we move into fall, richer, darker color pallets will be all the rage, but look for softer, less precise looks. And you definitely want to keep that dewy glow going. Here are a few of the top fall beauty trends.

Smudgy Eyeliner

If you never quite mastered all those ultra-precise cat eyes or other statement liner looks, this fall trend is more forgiving. Dark, smudgy, imprecise liner has made a come-back. Use eyeliner or mascara and smudge for this expressive, “I slept in my makeup” look.

Blurred Lips

While super shiny and defined “vinyl lips” are having a moment, for a more doable, everyday option, we prefer the blurred lip trend. To achieve the blurred lip look, pat on a lip stain, or use a fluffy eyeshadow brush to apply.

Feral Brows

Everything seems a little more relaxed this fall, and we’re here for it. Instead of super plucked, waxed, shaped and perfect brows, it’s time to go feral. Simply brush brows upwards with a spoolie and fill in any sparse spots with a pencil.

Cream Makeup

To keep that dewy skin vibe going, cream makeup is ideal. Look for cream foundations, blush, bronzers and highlighters to keep your skin looking moisturized and luminous, even as the weather gets cold.

Metallic Eye Shadow

Metallic eye shadow is in, but we’re talking a subtle wash of shimmery color, not glitter. Look for sheer, sparkly silvers, golds, bronze, or coppers to brighten eyes. It’s your time to shine.

Refresh Your Makeup Skills

refresh your makeup skills

If you took a little break from full makeup over the summer, we get it. Who’s wearing foundation at the beach? Soon it’s time to head back to school or into professional mode, so it’s a good time to brush up on your makeup skills. Check out these awesome makeup hacks to polish your technique and keep you looking your best.

Don’t conceal your concealer

If you’ve been putting on your concealer first, and then covering it with foundation, start with foundation first, and then use your concealer to cover any remaining blemishes and under eye circles or discoloration. Foundation will provide a smooth base for your concealer, and will also help to conceal any problem areas, so you’ll use less concealer, and there will be less caking or creasing.

Use a lip scrub

Lipstick not going on smooth? Try using a gentle exfoliating lip scrub once a week to achieve a softer, smoother canvas for perfect application every time.

Don’t forget to blush

Blush doesn’t always get the attention it deserves, but a soft, radiant blush can make all the difference in your overall appearance, making you look brighter, warmer, and livelier. Just add a bit of powder or cream blush on the high points of your cheeks and you’re good to go.

Get lusher lashes

Ready to make an impact? Dust some translucent powder on your lashes between coats of mascara to give your lashes some added volume and length!

DIY lip gloss

Here’s a fun tip: if you have an eyeshadow, blush, or bronzer in powdered form, you can mix it with a little petroleum jelly to make a custom-colored lip gloss you’re sure to love.

Back-to-School Beauty Essentials

back to school beauty essentials

When it’s time to head back to school, whether in-person, online or a combination, you want to look your best throughout the day and with the least amount of effort. Here are some back-to-school beauty essentials that you can use for a quick fix, and make your classmates turn their heads.

An awesome concealer

Up late studying? Or up early for class? Banish those dark circles with a concealer that brightens and depuffs. Choose one with a cool metal applicator or roller ball to soothe. Bonus trick: keep yours in the fridge for more depuffing power. You’ll look refreshed and awake.

A BB or CC cream

When you are looking for a multi-purpose beauty basic, don’t forget your BB and CC creams. A BB cream, known as Beauty Balm, is a great time saver and often acts as a moisturizer, sunscreen, and light foundation all in one. You’ll look naturally radiant and not overly made up, while protecting and hydrating your skin. A CC cream or Color Correcting cream is similar to a BB cream but offers additional coverage to correct discolorations such as hyperpigmentation or redness.

Dry shampoo

In a rush or just want to sleep in? Good news, you don’t have to wash, dry and restyle your hair every day! That’s what dry shampoo was made for. Spray some dry shampoo at the roots of your hair, let it do its oil-absorbing magic, and brush out. It will extend the life of your latest style, preserve your style, and if you have long hair save you a lot of time.

Oil blotting sheets

If you notice as the day goes on that you’re starting to look a little shiny onscreen, oil blotting sheets are your new BFF. You don’t have to redo, or undo, your makeup. Just simply press a discrete little sheet of paper on your face, and watch any excess oil disappear. Keep them handy in your purse or pocket.

Your favorite (portable) perfume

Love your signature scent, but hate how quickly it fades? Keep a travel sized version of your favorite perfume with you, either a spray, rollerball, or solid version, and feel free to reapply throughout the day, whenever you need a little refresher.

How to Take Care of Your Skin During the Summer

how to take care of your skin during the summer

Summer is the perfect time of year to show off your gorgeous, healthy skin! Be sure to keep your skin looking and feeling it’s best by taking care of it properly during the hot, summer months.  Here are some of our top tips for caring for your skin during the summer.

Protect Your Skin from the Sun

It is a well-known fact that being out in the sun can cause premature aging, sunspots, and even cancer. It’s recommended to make applying sunscreen a daily habit. Use sunscreen that offers an SPF of 30 or more, broad spectrum protection, and apply it generously everywhere you are exposed to the sun. Reapply every two hours. Don’t forget the tops of your ears, the part in your hair, or your lips! You can also try lip balm that offers a high SPF rating for added protection. Other protective measures that can help is wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses with UVA/UVB protection, SPF clothing, and finding a shady spot to hang out.

Lighten Up

Summer is the time to lighten up! Ditch the heavy foundation, lipsticks and liners and go for a sheer CC cream or tinted moisturizer, lip balm, and some waterproof mascara for a more relaxed, natural look. Also, swap out your thick winter moisturizer for a lighter lotion or gel-based version.

Use Products that do Double Duty

You probably don’t love the idea of slathering sunscreen on your face and then putting makeup on top of it.  Fortunately, there are lots of primers, tinted moisturizers, CC creams, and other products that include SPF 30+. You can also find tinted sunscreens that can act as a light, natural-looking base, while still protecting your skin from the sun.

Exfoliate & Moisturize

Sunscreen, sweat, bug spray, and oils can all wreak havoc with your skin, blocking pores and causing blemishes. Gently exfoliate your skin once or twice a week for a clean feeling and to keep you looking radiant. Also remember that salt, heat, chlorine, and sunburn can dry out your skin, so be sure to continue to moisturize over the summer.

Don’t Over Wash

Finally, it can be tempting to shower multiple times a day when it’s hot and sticky out and you are sweaty and coated with sunscreen. Try to limit showers to once a day, 15 minutes or less, and keep the water lukewarm or cool to prevent drying out your skin.

Tips to Protect Your Hair When Swimming

tips to protect your hair when swimming

As summer heats up, you may be ready to get out and cool down with a dip in the pool. Unfortunately, chlorinated water can do a number on your hair, stripping it of its natural moisture, causing split ends and other damage. It can even change your hair color!

People with hair that is thin or fine, color-treated or bleached, chemically treated, dry or damaged need to take extra precautions to make sure their lovely locks stay healthy, even after a refreshing dip in the pool. Here are some tips to keep your hair looking great after swimming.

Wet hair thoroughly before swimming

Dry hair will soak up chlorine like a sponge, which is why you should thoroughly rinse and wet your hair with non-chlorinated water before diving in.

Add a protective barrier

In addition to pre-soaking your hair, consider coating it with a little natural oil (coconut, olive, or jojoba) or buy a protective hair product specifically made for swimmers.

Style your hair to minimize exposure

If you have long hair, consider putting it in a ponytail, braid, or tight bun to minimize your hair’s contact with chlorine.

Wear a swim cap

If you swim regularly instead of just on occasion, you may want to consider wearing a swim cap as it’s your best defense against chlorinated water. Just remember to still wet your hair and pull it all back before putting on the cap because it makes it easier to put on.

Rinse, wash, and condition hair after swimming

Be sure to rinse your hair with clean, unchlorinated water as soon as you get out of the pool to get as much chlorine out as soon as possible.  Then wash with a gentle, clarifying shampoo and follow with conditioner to combat dryness. Again, you can find shampoos and conditioners made especially for swimmers.

How to Maintain and Care for your Beard

How to Maintain and Care for your Beard

Many men, at some point in their lives, decide to grow a beard. Knowing how to maintain and care for that beard can make all the difference between looking sophisticated and sexy to looking like you were raised by wolves. The good news is that growing a beard and caring for it is not hard, and with a few simple tips, you’ll be looking and feeling your best.

Let it grow, let it grow!

Step one for growing a beard is leave it alone. Don’t shave, don’t try to shape or style it. Just leave it untouched for 4 to 6 weeks. After that, your beard should have grown in evenly and will be long enough to work with.

Visit your barber

At this point, it might be a good idea to enlist some expert help. A good barber can help you pick the right style and length of beard for your face shape and do the initial shaping. Once you find a look you love, you’ll just have to maintain it.

Keep it trimmed

Remember that your beard and mustache are always growing, so you’ll need to invest in a good beard trimmer and a pair of grooming scissors to keep everything under control. Also note that the shorter the beard style you choose, the more often you’ll need to trim it to keep that tight style.

Shampoo and condition

When you shower, be sure to wash and condition your beard just like you would the hair on your head. Since the skin on your face is more sensitive than your scalp, you may want to consider a beard wash/conditioner for a little extra TLC.

Tame unruly facial hair

If your beard hair grows neatly downward, consider yourself lucky, as for others, it may stick out or be rebellious. Once your beard is completely dry, smooth on a few drops of beard oil to soften the hair and use a beard comb to gently remove tangles. You may also want to try a beard pomade or mustache wax to help create and maintain the shape you want.
