Career Paths for Skin Care Professionals

Career Paths for skin care professionals graphic

If you’re interested in skin care, ready to join the beauty industry, and are passionate about helping people look and feel their best, you should consider a career as a skin care professional. With  hands-on training in a Skin Care Specialty Program from an accredited school, like Shore Beauty School, you’ll have an opportunity to explore various career paths available to use the skills you learn in facial massage and treatments, makeup techniques, and body treatments. Here are possible career paths you can consider to get you started.

Facial and Skin Care Specialist

Skin care specialists give facials, full-body treatments, head and neck massages, as well as exfoliating treatments like masks, peels, and scrubs. They may also apply make-up and teach clients how to best care for their skin. Facial and skin care specialists typically work in spas or salons.

Makeup Artist

Makeup artists help people look their best for weddings, proms, fashion shows, photography sessions, galas, and other special events. They can also look to careers in the theatrical or film makeup industry, sometimes using special effects, prosthetics and more to create special characters.

Aesthetician

Aestheticians understand different skin types, recognize common skin issues, and provide a range of treatments for their clients including facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, light treatments and more. These skin care treatments can address different issues such as aging skin, acne, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and redness. Aestheticians often work in med spas or wellness facilities, as well as regular salons and spas.

Skin Care Product Sales

A skin care sales representative works for a specific skin care brand, store, or a product manufacturer, and works directly with potential customers to help drive sales. If you work in skin care sales, you need to be outgoing, fully understand the products you’re selling, know what works best for different skin types, and be able to provide helpful advice and recommendations. You may sell products directly to consumers, or to aestheticians, dermatologists, and retail stores and salons.

Skin Care Instructor

Once you’ve received the proper training in skin care services and have gained some real-world experience, you may want to share your skills and knowledge with students as a skin care instructor for a beauty school like Shore. It can be very satisfying to see people you’ve mentored become the next generation of skin care professionals.

How to Take Care of Your Skin During the Summer

How to Take Care of Your Skin During the Summer

Summer is the perfect time of year to show off your gorgeous, healthy skin! Be sure to keep your skin looking and feeling it’s best by taking care of it properly during the hot, summer months.  Here are some of our top tips for caring for your skin during the summer.

Protect Your Skin from the Sun

It is a well-known fact that being out in the sun can cause premature aging, sunspots, and even cancer. It’s recommended to make applying sunscreen a daily habit. Use sunscreen that offers an SPF of 30 or more, broad spectrum protection, and apply it generously everywhere you are exposed to the sun. Reapply every two hours. Don’t forget the tops of your ears, the part in your hair, or your lips! You can also try lip balm that offers a high SPF rating for added protection. Other protective measures that can help is wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses with UVA/UVB protection, SPF clothing, and finding a shady spot to hang out.

Lighten Up

Summer is the time to lighten up! Ditch the heavy foundation, lipsticks and liners and go for a sheer CC cream or tinted moisturizer, lip balm, and some waterproof mascara for a more relaxed, natural look. Also, swap out your thick winter moisturizer for a lighter lotion or gel-based version.

Use Products that do Double Duty

You probably don’t love the idea of slathering sunscreen on your face and then putting makeup on top of it.  Fortunately, there are lots of primers, tinted moisturizers, CC creams, and other products that include SPF 30+. You can also find tinted sunscreens that can act as a light, natural-looking base, while still protecting your skin from the sun.

Exfoliate & Moisturize

Sunscreen, sweat, bug spray, and oils can all wreak havoc with your skin, blocking pores and causing blemishes. Gently exfoliate your skin once or twice a week for a clean feeling and to keep you looking radiant. Also remember that salt, heat, chlorine, and sunburn can dry out your skin, so be sure to continue to moisturize over the summer.

Don’t Over Wash

Finally, it can be tempting to shower multiple times a day when it’s hot and sticky out and you are sweaty and coated with sunscreen. Try to limit showers to once a day, 15 minutes or less, and keep the water lukewarm or cool to prevent drying out your skin.

Get Ready for Summer with a Safe & Sunless Spray Tan

Get Ready for Summer with a Safe & Sunless Spray Tan

Get Ready for Summer with a Safe & Sunless Spray Tan

Has a long winter indoors left you looking pale and ghostlike? As summer approaches, it’s time to prepare for shorts, tank tops, and swimwear by getting a gorgeous, glowing tan. But we all know that laying out in the sun is bad for you, and some self-tanners can leave you looking a little orange. For a safe, sunless, and natural-looking solution, you may want to get a spray tan. Here are some tips for a fabulous faux tan.

How to Prep Your Skin

Before you go get your spray tan, it’s important to exfoliate your entire body the day before with a mild scrub or loofah. Also, you should shave before the spray tan,  not right after, but again, shave a day or several hours before so the tanner doesn’t settle in your pores. On the day of your spray tan, avoid wearing makeup, perfumes, creams, lotions, oils, or deodorants. Anything on your skin can cause uneven results.

What to Expect

Most spray tanning services will provide you with disposable underwear that you can wear when spray tanning, or you can go fully natural if you aren’t shy. Be sure to remove any jewelry or accessories and tuck your hair into a hair net or cap (also usually provided). Your tanning specialist will talk to you about how dark you’d like your tan to be, and then will spray your entire body, usually starting with your face and working down. Follow instructions so your application is even.

Finishing Touches

Once finished, your tanning specialist will ensure that your palms and nails are clean of tanning solution. They may buff certain areas that they feel are uneven, and some may dry you with an air hose.

After the Spray Tan

When you are fully dry, you can get dressed. Wear dark, loose clothing so your tan doesn’t rub off (and if some does, it isn’t noticeable). Follow your tanning specialist’s instructions as in most cases you’ll have to avoid getting wet for 8 -12 hours as your tan develops. Be warned that your tan may appear darker than you anticipated at first, but after you rinse off the bronzer, you should have the natural look you desire. If you are tanning for a specific event, most people recommend you get your spray tan 2 – 3 days before so it is fully developed before you go.

Your spray tan will typically last 5 – 12 days, but will fade faster on your hands and face. Follow instructions on making your tan last as long as possible, and use lotions specifically designed for spray- tanned skin, as some ingredients in regular lotions can actually strip your tan off faster.

Get Your Spray Tan Today!

If you’d like to get a gorgeous glow to get ready for summer, book an appointment or show up (walk-ins welcome) at Shore Beauty School’s REDKEN Premier School Clinic. We offer the Norvell spray tan, an immediate beautiful bronze tan that not only looks good but is formulated with a skin-firming blend that builds and restores the skin’s matrix.

How to Take Care of Your Skin During the Colder Seasons

How to Take Care of Your Skin During the Colder Seasons

How to Take Care of Your Skin During the Colder Seasons

Cold, winter weather can wreak havoc with your skin. Icy temperatures, strong winds, and low humidity can rob your skin of much-needed moisture, and dry, indoor heat does the same. The result is dry, flakey, itchy skin, that can even crack and become irritating. That’s why you should consider the following tips to keep your skin smooth, soft, and radiant all winter long.

Don’t strip your skin of moisture

Your skin produces natural oils to protect itself, so you don’t want to remove those oils. Avoid frequently washing too much using hot water, taking long showers or baths, or using harsh cleansers or ones with drying ingredients like glycolic or salicylic acids. When you do shower or bathe, gently pat your skin dry and use a body oil or lotion to keep that moisture in.

Adjust your home climate

Although it’s tempting to crank up the heat on cold days, try to keep your thermostat at the lowest temperature that still feels comfortable to you. Also, add moisture to the air by using a humidifier, as that moisture will be absorbed by your thirsty skin.

Drink up

Speaking of thirst, you can moisturize your skin from the inside out by drinking lots of water every day. Try to avoid alcohol, coffee or soda in excess as those beverages actually have dehydrating effects on the body.

Protect yourself from the sun

Some people think that sunscreen is only necessary during the summer months, but that’s not true. In fact, the sun can reflect off snow and ice and hit you from different angles than usual. Sun exposure is a year-round risk when you are outdoors, so make wearing sunscreen a habit.

Find a favorite moisturizer

Switch to a heavier, oil-based moisturizer during the colder months, and consider overnight deep moisturizing treatments for problem areas like lips, hands, and feet. Putting socks or gloves on over lotion can keep it from wearing off and let it sink into skin. Paraffin wax treatments on hands and feet can also help hydrate and leave your skin feeling smooth and soft.

How to Keep Your Skin Healthy and Hydrated Over the Summer

How to keep your skin healthy and hydrated over the summer

How to Keep Your Skin Healthy and Hydrated Over the Summer

It’s summer! Are you ready to show off your healthy, shiny, radiant skin? If you paused and had to think about the answer to that question, then read on! Sometimes too much sun, heat, chemicals and other factors can make your skin dry, flakey and irritated. Here are some great tips to ensure that your skin is healthy, hydrated and ready to show off this summer!

Keep Your Cool

Did you know that those long hot showers can actually make your dry skin worse? Hot water and steam can damage the moisture barrier in your skin, making it harder to retain the hydration you need. Keep your showers short and as cool as you can.

Lock in Hydration

After that shower, be sure to moisturize to lock hydration into your skin. Whether you want to use a body oil, slather on a rich lotion, or go for something lighter, applying moisturizer to damp skin is the key to a healthy look. For your facial moisturizer, choose one that contains hyaluronic acid or other ingredients that keep moisture in the skin. If you can get a high SPF sunscreen in there too, you’ll save yourself a step.

Check for Potential Irritants

Whenever you buy skincare products, read the label. Avoid getting soaps, cleansers or other products that contain alcohol, heavy fragrances, antibacterial detergents, etc. which may irritate skin. Go for gentle, moisturizing cleansers. Also, don’t vigorously rub your skin dry with a towel. This can also cause irritation. Instead, gently pat your skin dry.

Drink Lots of Water

People don’t often think about treating their skin from the inside out, but staying well hydrated, especially over the summer, is good for your whole body. Drink plenty of water frequently during the day, and cut back on coffee, alcohol, or sodas which can dehydrate you and make your skin look dull.

Just Mist It

Want a quick pick-me-up? Get yourself a refreshing facial mist to carry with you over the summer. When your make-up starts to melt down, or you’re starting to feel a little wilted, a couple spritzes of cool, treated water will revitalize your makeup and perk you up.

Be Sun Smart

The best thing you can do for your skin over the summer is use sunscreen often when taking in the sun’s rays, reapplying frequently. Get a broad spectrum, high SPF product, and consider mineral sunscreens if chemical sunscreens cause irritation. Find something you love, so you’ll use it. While the sunshine may feel like your friend, it can be your biggest enemy, causing pre-mature aging, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles and even skin cancer.  If you do get a little too much sun, use an after-sun product containing aloe vera to soothe that burn.

DIY Facial You Can Do at Home

DIY facials you can do at home

DIY Facial You Can Do at Home

Are you looking for a DIY facial you can do at home? Spoiling yourself with a luxurious facial at the spa is always a treat. The price tag for that spa facial – not always such a treat. Good news fans of self-care everywhere! You can enjoy a fabulous, skin-loving facial for a fraction of the cost! And the best part? You can get the royal treatment without ever leaving the house with a DIY facial you can do at home with ingredients from your own kitchen!

Start your day off right

This facial is made up of a soothing mixture of oatmeal, egg yolks, honey, and olive oil and is just the ticket! Stir together an egg yolk with ½ a cup of oatmeal and 1 tablespoon each of honey and olive oil. Apply evenly to your face and let it set for 15 minutes, then rinse off with water. Oatmeal soothes the skin as egg yolks tighten it. The antibacterial properties in honey are perfect for fighting acne.

Lighten up

If you suffer from hyperpigmentation, this is the DIY mask for you. Combine ½ cup of mashed papaya with 2 tablespoons of honey and apply to your face for 20 minutes. Rinse off and apply moisturizer.

Butter me up

The acidic properties in buttermilk and yogurt are perfect for exfoliating your skin and leave it glowingly smooth. Just mix ½ cup of buttermilk with a couple dollops of plain yogurt and smooth over your face for a few hours before rinsing off.

Nature’s nurture

If taco night left you with some leftover avocado, you’ve got the makings of a hydrating facial that will leave your skin soft and supple. A really ripe avocado works best for this facial. Mash it together with a little honey and apply to your face for 20-30 minutes before rinsing with warm water.

Sugar, no spice

Brown sugar is perfect for exfoliating and removing dead skin cells. Mix a tablespoon of brown sugar with a teaspoon of olive oil or coconut oil, blend it into a paste and gently massage into your face. Wash off and apply moisturizer and a good SPF to protect your newly exfoliated skin.

Finding ways to keep your skin looking and feeling great without leaving the house is the perfect way to indulge in a little self-care. Especially now, when we’re all spending more time at home. Should You Get a Facial Cleansing Brush?

Should You Get a Facial Cleansing Brush?

You’ve probably wondered if you should get a facial cleansing brush before. Are they really all that?Let’s just say that, when it comes to achieving healthy, radiant skin, you are a product of, well, your products! Choosing the right skincare products can be the difference between dull skin and dazzling skin! If you’re looking for dazzling skin, you’ll definitely want to add a facial cleansing brush to your skincare regimen. Here are five reasons why you should:

Get deep with your skin

Whoever said beauty is skin deep wasn’t kidding. Going deeper than the surface of your skin when you’re cleansing eliminates even more oil, dirt, and dead skin cells. A cleansing brush penetrates below the surface better and maximizes the cleansing of your pores.

Speeds up cell turnover

Did you know that your skin renews itself every 28 days? The exfoliation from a cleansing brush speeds that process up by stimulating collagen production.

Minimizes pores

Facial brushes exfoliate the skin, tightening it and minimizing pores over time.

User-friendly

You don’t have to go to a spa or do an expensive peel to improve your skin. Facial brushes are totally simple to use and even better, you can do it in the comfort of your own home!

Preps your skin for maximum product penetration

You’ll see even better results from your serum or facial cream when you start with a facial brush. It preps your skin to absorb your skincare products more easily, so you’ll likely see better results!

Adding a facial brush to your skincare routine can really help give your skin that beautiful, radiant boost you’ve been looking for. Just be sure to include applying SPF after using a cleansing brush to protect your newly exfoliated skin. If you get excited about skincare, maybe you should consider a career in skincare! Estheticians and skincare specialists are important roles in the evolving beauty industry.Ready to learn more about a career helping others improve the skin they’re in? 5 Back to School Beauty Trends

woman

With summer winding down and a whole new school year ahead, you may be considering what look you’re going to rock, not only on the first day back to school, but all year long. Nailing it early on can set the stage for an epic year! You’re going to want to get this right. If you need a little inspiration, look no further than these five back to school beauty trends.

1. What goes with everything?

That would be nude makeup. You’re already rocking fabulous hair, the perfect outfit and nails to die for. Accentuating your natural glow with an oh so neutral color palette is the perfect accessory!

2. Get to browsing

Meaning accent those brows like a boss! It’s easy with a little colored eye shadow above your eyes and brushed over your brows. If you’re complexion is medium to dark, try using rich magenta shades for a look that packs a punch. Those with paler skin can try earthy reds or peach tones.

3. Get primed

It’s not just for super models, actresses or your older sister. Primer rules! Why wouldn’t you want your makeup to look as fresh at 4 pm as it did when you left the house? Start your day and your makeup routine with a good primer as your base. You’ll be especially glad you did when you still look on point after a log day.

4. Let your eyes do the talking

Ridiculously long eyelashes are always trending. So, don’t forget to sweep those lovely lashes with a good, smudge-proof mascara. If you’re feeling really glam, throw on some fake eyelashes!

5. Highlight your best features

It seems like the world is obsessed with highlighter and with good reason! Rock this trend with a shimmery dusting of highlighter on your cheeks and the outside corners of your brows. You’ll be radiating a glow that says I brought summer with me!

Make this year unforgettable by having a little fun with your look! After all, this – is your time. And if creating fun and fabulous looks is more than just a first day of school thing, you may want to consider a career in cosmetology! If you’d like to learn more about a career that puts the power of transformation in your own two hands, contact your local state licensing board for a list of beauty schools near you.

Top 5 Summer Makeup Tips

Summer makeup tips with two ladies on the beach

Is there anything worse than a great tan accompanied by makeup melting off your face on a hot summer day? Yes, summer brings out the cute sandals, sundresses, and beach hair we love, but the heat and humidity is not so great for your makeup. You can beat summer at its own game with a few simple tips and turn your summer face from a hot mess to cool and fresh!

1  Make moisturizer do some multi-tasking

Moisturizing is important no matter what season it is. But in the steamy summer months, choose a lighter, oil-free moisturizer and mix it with a good primer to keep your makeup fresher longer.

 2  Build a lighter foundation

Instead of using a heavy foundation, opt for a lighter version and choose one with UV protection of at least SPF 30 to avoid having to apply yet another layer on your face.

3  Water proof it

Combat raccoon eyes without giving up that dip in the pool by using waterproof mascara in the summer. Be sure to use a cotton swab to clean up any smudges during application since it’s harder to get off than regular mascara.

 4  Bronzer over blush

For a summery glow, trade out your blush for bronzer applying it to the areas on your face where the sun lands.

5  Set it and forget it

Primer isn’t your only weapon for keeping your look fresh for the long haul. Finish your makeup off with a spritz of setting spray and you’ll have the ultimate staying power.

Get the most out of your summer with a face that’s fresh and ready for anything! If you’re a fan of all things beauty and skincare, maybe a future in the beauty industry is right for you! For more information on careers in the world of beauty, contact your local state licensing board for a list of beauty schools and programs in your area.
