Refresh Your Makeup Skills

If you took a little break from full makeup over the summer, we get it. Who’s wearing foundation at the beach? Soon it’s time to head back to school or into professional mode, so it’s a good time to brush up on your makeup skills. Check out these awesome makeup hacks to polish your technique and keep you looking your best.

Don’t conceal your concealer

If you’ve been putting on your concealer first, and then covering it with foundation, start with foundation first, and then use your concealer to cover any remaining blemishes and under eye circles or discoloration. Foundation will provide a smooth base for your concealer, and will also help to conceal any problem areas, so you’ll use less concealer, and there will be less caking or creasing.

Use a lip scrub

Lipstick not going on smooth? Try using a gentle exfoliating lip scrub once a week to achieve a softer, smoother canvas for perfect application every time.

Don’t forget to blush

Blush doesn’t always get the attention it deserves, but a soft, radiant blush can make all the difference in your overall appearance, making you look brighter, warmer, and livelier. Just add a bit of powder or cream blush on the high points of your cheeks and you’re good to go.

Get lusher lashes

Ready to make an impact? Dust some translucent powder on your lashes between coats of mascara to give your lashes some added volume and length!

DIY lip gloss

Here’s a fun tip: if you have an eyeshadow, blush, or bronzer in powdered form, you can mix it with a little petroleum jelly to make a custom-colored lip gloss you’re sure to love.

DIY Natural Makeup Looks

DIY Natural Makeup Looks

While it can be fun to go full glam with your makeup for a special event or night on the town, most of us require a more natural look for our everyday lives. The goal is to look like yourself, but better, enhancing your best features and feeling confident. Try out some of these do-it-yourself natural makeup looks that are trending and show you off!

Replace full coverage foundation for a tinted moisturizer

Some people find that a full-coverage foundation feels too heavy for a natural, everyday look. Instead, choose a sheer, tinted moisturizer to even out and brighten your skin tone without weighing you down. Find one with an SPF as well, and it’ll be doing triple-duty for your skin.

Swap your cakey blush for a flush of sheer color

If you want a natural-looking blush, opt for sheer, cream formulas that blend in smoothly and never look cakey. Use a formula that is light and buildable, so you don’t overdo those rosy cheeks.

Go for natural highlights, not glitter

The right highlighter can give you a dewy glow and emphasize your cheekbones. The key is to find one with finely milled particles and a satiny finish, so you look luminous, but not glittery. Use a light touch and apply wherever the sun would naturally reflect off your skin.

Brush up brows instead of overplucking or overdrawing

Brows can often look overdone, either too dark and filled in or overplucked and unnatural. Instead, simply use a spoolie brush to brush your eyebrows straight up or on the diagonal towards your temples to make you look more awake and energized. You can use a clear brow gel or try the latest trend of using glycerin soap (“soap brows”) to set them in place.

Opt for neutral eyes instead of dramatic

For a professional, daytime look, consider lightly dusting your lids in a sheer, pale color (such as taupe) and then “cutting the crease” of your eyelid with a slightly darker neutral. There are lots of lovely neutral eye shadow palettes available that coordinate with your eye color to help you achieve a soft, natural look.

Choose a nude lip balm instead of a bold lipstick

Finally, ditch the bright red lipstick, super shiny glosses or bold matte colors, and choose a lightly tinted lip balm. You’ll get a hint of natural color while moisturizing your lips.

Winter Makeup Trends to Inspire Your Holiday Look

It’s time to up the drama and glamour in your life and celebrate the holidays by trying the latest winter makeup trends. Be a little bold and make yourself memorable by playing with the most sensational new looks of the season. Let the festivities begin!

Metallic Eyes

Let your eyes shine with rich, metallic colors with a hint of shimmer. Look for an icy wash of silver, or go for the gold, copper or bronze to add some lux to those lids.

Draped Blush

Similar to how curtain bangs can frame your face, draped blush, which is the technique of applying blush to your temples and cheeks, is universally flattering. Get that holiday, “Baby, it’s cold outside” glow and show off those cheekbones.

A Bold, Burgundy Lip

Be the center of attention at your holiday party and make with a statement with wine-stained lip. Don’t be shy!  It’s time to lavish those lips in the most luscious, must-have color of the season. (Pro-tip: burgundy tends to work better with more skin tones than those retro reds.)

Embellished Lids

One of the hottest trends in makeup this winter isn’t even technically makeup at all. Accent your eyes with stick-on crystals or pearls to up the glam factor. There are so many different ways you can bedazzle your lids.

Brows that Wow

Brows this season are less precise and plucked, and instead are thicker, fuller and, dare we say, fluffier.  Go for a more natural shape, feather those babies out, and hold them in place with…uh…soap? Check out #soapbrows online and you’ll see what we mean.

Easy Beauty Hacks for Halloween

Easy Beauty Hacks for Halloween

This Halloween is all about makeup! You can become virtually any character you want, from glamorous to horrifying, just using a bunch of products you likely already have on hand. So, get ready to get creative, crafty, and creepy, and try these easy, DIY makeup hacks for the best Halloween ever.

Fake Blood

No need to go buy fake blood from the costume store. Who knows what’s in that stuff anyway? Instead, there are a number of “recipes” for fake blood online. Try mixing a little red lipstick with black cream eyeliner and some clear lip gloss (use more red for fresh blood, more black for dried or deep wounds). There’s also a recipe that uses food coloring, cocoa powder and honey (yum!). Experiment to see what mixture gives you the most realistic look.

Scars and Wounds

If you want to create some scary scars or wounds, you can mix petroleum jelly with flour and a full-coverage foundation to create a fake skin paste that you can sculpt into raised scars, cuts or slashes. Add some of that fake blood in the center for an oozing wound effect. You can also create a similar damaged skin look using lash glue and torn up pieces of one-ply toilet tissue. Once you have the texture you want, you can lightly dab foundation over the top.

Veins

Nothing adds the creep factor quite like some bulging 3D veins. Using a very thin eyeliner brush, paint lash glue in a veiny looking pattern on your face, and then apply pieces of yarn over the glue to hold in place. Veins can be black, blue, red or whatever creepy color you prefer.

Spider Eye

You’ve probably heard of the cat eye, but have you ever tried a “spider eye”? There are a lot of pictures and tutorials that show how to achieve this unnerving look of a large spider scuttling over one eye. Your eyelid, up to the crease, can be defined as the body of the spider with some charcoal eye shadow, and then you can draw eight segmented legs with your favorite black liner. Add some white highlights to the legs for a 3D effect.

And So Much More!

Check out Instagram and YouTube for some inspiration as to what to be for Halloween, and how to achieve the look you desire. Whether you want to be a Bratz Doll, a Glam Zombie, a Deer, the Joker, or any other character from your favorite TV show or movie, you’ll likely find a tutorial that will guide you through the transformative process step-by-step.

If you love experimenting with makeup and Halloween is your favorite holiday, maybe you should consider pursuing a career in the beauty industry. Shore Beauty School can help provide the training you need to become a professional makeup artist. Check out our Cosmetology or Skin Care Specialty Program to provide you with hands-on instruction to prepare you for a beautiful future. Great Career Choices if You Want to Be a Makeup Artist

Great Career Choices if You Want to Be a Makeup Artist

Do you have a passion for doing makeup? Would you like to make a career out of it? Fortunately, there are a number of great careers for talented makeup artists including helping brides and bridal parties look picture-perfect on that special day, working in film or theater, or representing a popular beauty brand. Whatever career path you’re interested in taking, Shore Beauty School can help you get there.

Salon or Spa Makeup Artist

Doing your make-up magic in the setting of an all-inclusive salon or spa can provide you with a regular schedule and paycheck, and give you the opportunity to apply make-up on a wide variety of people. You can also help people for many different types of occasions, whether helping a girl look beautiful for her first prom, or doing a make-over on someone who is starting a new chapter in their life, or bride-to-be makeup.

Retail/Brand Makeup Artist

Many great careers in make-up artistry require that you have an aptitude for sales to show off specific products or brands, whether in a mall, salon, or even directly in people’s homes. Retail make-up artists perform makeovers and teach consumers how to use makeup to help them look their best. This position requires detailed knowledge about the products you will sell, as well as a friendly, confident demeanor and the ability to teach effective make-up techniques.

Bridal Makeup Artist

If you love the idea of working with blushing brides and specializing in wedding make-up, becoming a bridal makeup artist might be perfect for you. You’ll likely do most of your work over the weekends or non-traditional hours, but once you build a portfolio of your work and start to market yourself, the wedding industry can be very rewarding. If you have talent, brides will recommend you to other brides and your business may soon take off.

Film or Theater Makeup

Do you have a theatrical flair? Maybe you should consider doing make-up for TV, theater, movies and more. Theatrical makeup tends to be more exaggerated, so people can see faces from the back row, and may also be used to create specific characters. With this career path you can let your creative flair take shape by making people look older, adding scars, using protheses, and more. Special effects makeup (SFX) takes this even farther, turning people into animals, monsters, or fantasy/sci-fi characters.

Beauty Writer/Blogger/Influencer

If, in addition to your makeup talents, you are gifted at writing, photography, or making videos, you could pursue a career as a beauty writer, blogger, or influencer. These positions give you the opportunity to write posts or articles, test and review beauty products, demonstrate makeup techniques, and share your knowledge with others. While it may take time to grow an audience, eventually you may attract the attention of advertisers, sponsors and interested beauty brands.

Do any of these exciting beauty careers appeal to you? If so, Shore Beauty School can help provide the training you need to become a professional makeup artist. Check out our Cosmetology or Skin Care Specialty Program to provide you with hands-on instruction to prepare you for a beautiful career. Should You Get a Facial Cleansing Brush?

should you get a facial cleaning brush?

Should You Get a Facial Cleansing Brush?

You’ve probably wondered if you should get a facial cleansing brush before. Are they really all that?Let’s just say that, when it comes to achieving healthy, radiant skin, you are a product of, well, your products! Choosing the right skincare products can be the difference between dull skin and dazzling skin! If you’re looking for dazzling skin, you’ll definitely want to add a facial cleansing brush to your skincare regimen. Here are five reasons why you should:

Get deep with your skin

Whoever said beauty is skin deep wasn’t kidding. Going deeper than the surface of your skin when you’re cleansing eliminates even more oil, dirt, and dead skin cells. A cleansing brush penetrates below the surface better and maximizes the cleansing of your pores.

Speeds up cell turnover

Did you know that your skin renews itself every 28 days? The exfoliation from a cleansing brush speeds that process up by stimulating collagen production.

Minimizes pores

Facial brushes exfoliate the skin, tightening it and minimizing pores over time.

User-friendly

You don’t have to go to a spa or do an expensive peel to improve your skin. Facial brushes are totally simple to use and even better, you can do it in the comfort of your own home!

Preps your skin for maximum product penetration

You’ll see even better results from your serum or facial cream when you start with a facial brush. It preps your skin to absorb your skincare products more easily, so you’ll likely see better results!

Adding a facial brush to your skincare routine can really help give your skin that beautiful, radiant boost you’ve been looking for. Just be sure to include applying SPF after using a cleansing brush to protect your newly exfoliated skin. If you get excited about skincare, maybe you should consider a career in skincare! Estheticians and skincare specialists are important roles in the evolving beauty industry.Ready to learn more about a career helping others improve the skin they’re in? One easy technique for eliminating that tired look is to apply a little flesh-colored eyeliner. Outline the rim of your eye and the inner corners for a brighter, more wide-awake look.

Do a little brow-sing

It’s been all about brows for a while now and one way to draw attention to your eyes is with well-defined brows. If you are new to filling in brows or have sparse areas, simply apply the same eye shadow you use on your lids to your brows. This helps give your brows a softer and more natural look.

The layered look

Layering your eye shadow not only creates dimension, it is a great way to achieve the coveted smoky eye. Start with an all-over application of lighter shadow, followed by a darker shade in the same color palette in the crease of your eye. Gently blend to avoid a looking like you striped your eye shadow on.

Line those lower lids

A lot of people are reluctant to use liner on anything but the upper eyelid. Using a brown or black liquid or pencil eyeliner, outline bothyour top and bottom lids for a dramatic effect.
