Let’s face it – the confidence that comes with great hair can change your whole life! So, naturally we’ll do just about anything to get that great hair. Everything from trying out the latest hair color, to the hottest flat iron, to a hair treatment made from something honeybees secrete called royal jelly.
Yep, the things we’ll do for great hair. Some of those things might actually be doing more harm than good. You may want to pay attention to these top ways you could be ruining your hair.
Long-hair don’t care
We all know that girl. You know, the one who vows never to cut her hair. Why should she? It’s long and thick and…needs a regular trim. Whether you’re growing your hair out or growing it indefinitely, getting the ends trimmed on a regular basis will keep it healthy and growing! Skipping trims can lead to dead, split ends and nobody’s got time for that!
Too much of a good thing
It’s hard to imagine hair before conditioner. How did it exist? Overdoing it when you slather conditioner on your hair won’t have the effect you think it will. More conditioner doesn’t mean softer hair. In fact, most daily conditioners contain sulfates that strip your hair of moisture. Apply conditioner only to the ends of your hair and try using a hair mask once or twice a week instead of a daily glob of conditioner.
Step away from the brush
Or comb, when your hair is wet. Brushing or combing wet hair is an invitation for breakage. Unfortunately, it’s often hard to avoid brushing your hair when it’s wet. If you must, use a wide tooth comb and start at the tips of your air gently working toward the roots.
Speaking of wet hair
The trusty flat iron is often our best friend. Taking one to damp or wet hair is a recipe for disaster. Always make sure your hair is completely dry before using a flat iron on it. Go the extra mile and use a heat-protecting spray.
Your hair can be too clean
The idea that you need to shampoo every day is just that – an idea. The truth is that over-washing your hair can strip it of its natural oils, fade your color, and lead to frizz. Sometimes, less really is more.
Rubbing it the wrong way
And with the wrong thing! Roughly toweling your hair dry with a cotton towel can damage the cuticles of your hair. A better alternative is an old t-shirt or a microfiber cloth. Be sure to squeeze gently and don’t wring your hair.
