How to Become a Hairstylist and Open a Salon

Become a hairstylist and open a salon

If you’ve dreamed of becoming a hairstylist and someday owning your own salon, it’s time to put yourself on the path towards making that dream come true. Working as a hairstylist and helping people to look and feel their best can be a very rewarding career, and, if you have an entrepreneurial spirit, owning your own salon can be an exciting way to take your career to the next level – giving you freedom and control over your own business.

Get the Training You Need

To start with, you’ll need to gain the skills and knowledge you’ll need to succeed, by enrolling in a Cosmetology & Hairstyling program through an accredited school like Shore Beauty School. Shore also has a renowned beauty clinic where you can gain real-world experience, further develop your technical skills, speed, confidence, and professionalism by working with actual clients.

Learn Business Fundamentals

Shore also offers Shear Success Business Fundamentals, a supplemental program that teaches you the foundation of building a business, including creating a book of clientele, networking, marketing, client management, and ways to maximize your earnings.

Make a Business Plan

Once you’ve graduated and have passed your licensing exam, you may want to start working at a salon to gain some experience before starting out on your own. When you’re ready to start your own business, the first step is always to write a solid business plan, as well as considering costs (how much you will need to get started, how much to charge, how much business you will need to do to keep the salon running and profitable). You may also need to consider taking out a small business loan or looking for an investor to help you get started. If done well, your business plan can help you secure a loan or investor.

Salon Start-up Checklist

Here are some of the key steps you’ll need to consider when opening your own hair salon. You’ll need to:

  • Choose your legal structure.
  • Register your salon business and its name.
  • Choose a location to rent or buy.
  • Get a license to operate.
  • Get insurance.
  • Choose suppliers.
  • Purchase the equipment, salon furniture, and supplies you’ll need.
  • Hire your staff (receptionist, stylists, nail techs, etc.).
  • Train your new hires.
  • Start booking and marketing.

It can be a lot of work, but if you are passionate about owning your own business and love the beauty industry, it can definitely pay off.

How to Find the Right Beauty School for You

finding a beauty school that's right for you

If you love being creative, have a passion for beauty, and enjoy making people look and feel their best, then a career in the beauty industry may be perfect for you. But, with so many options out there, how do you find the right beauty school to give you the training and hands-on experience you need to succeed?

Pick Your Profession

To discover the school that is right for you, first, consider what direction you want to take. Would you like to become a hairdresser, a barber, a nail tech, or a skincare specialist? Not sure? You may want to consider a comprehensive cosmetology degree to keep your options open.

Narrow Down Your Choices

Next, since the beauty profession requires hands-on learning, you’ll want to make a list of beauty schools that are in your area, unless you are willing to relocate, and offer the programs you are interested in. Additionally, look for a school that has a full-service beauty clinic where you can hone your skills on real customers. Shore Beauty School is conveniently located in a modern, technology-enabled campus in Egg Harbor, New Jersey.

Visit Your Top Schools

Once you have a manageable list of your top picks, schedule a tour at each school. There is nothing quite like seeing a school in person to help you get a feel for the place. Would you fit in here? Can you envision yourself in this environment? Would this place help you reach your career goals?

Top Questions to Ask During Your Beauty School Tour

When you’re on your tour, don’t hesitate to ask a lot of questions. Choosing a beauty school is a big decision and you want to be well-informed. Here is a list of questions to get you started:

  • Is this beauty school accredited?
  • How long has the school been open?
  • Are there students or graduates you can talk to about the school or specific programs?
  • What is the graduation rate?
  • Do they offer flexible class schedules?
  • How long will it take to get your degree?
  • Does the school offer financial aid?
  • Does the campus look clean and professional?
  • Do the students seem happy?
  • Does the school offer support after graduation or help with job placement?

Romantic Hairstyles Sure to Impress this Valentine’s Day

Romantic Hairstyles Sure to Impress this Valentine’s Day graphic

Ah, Valentine’s Day! Love is in the air, but what about your hair? Whether you’re planning on a casual night, or going out for a candlelit dinner, you want to look and feel your best. Try one of these gorgeous, romantic hairstyles.

Get the Best of Both Worlds

Can’t decide whether to put your hair up or leave it down? The half up, half down hairstyle is the perfect solution. Leave the bottom layer of your hair loose and pull the top layer up and away from your face. This is a flattering style that draws attention and accentuates your amazing, flawless features. You can leave the bottom half of your hair wavy, curly or straight, and secure the top half in a ponytail, bun, braid, or use a pretty barrette.

Try a Playful Ponytail

Believe it or not, your lazy-day ponytail can be downright playful, and it only takes a few more minutes to achieve. Use a curling iron to add some bouncy curls and volume. Then section off the top part of your hair. Secure the rest of your hair in a high ponytail with an elastic band. Back-comb the top section to add fullness and incorporate into your ponytail using another elastic. Pull out some fringe around your face for a softer look. Finally, take a small a section of hair from the ponytail and wrap it around the elastics and secure with a bobby pin. This gives you a more polished look.

Turn up the Volume

For a look that will make your special someone’s head turn, nothing beats big hair with lots of volume and full, loose curls. Use big velcro rollers on dry, sectioned hair, heat with a blow dryer, and cool completely before taking them out. Or you can also use a big-barreled curling iron and spray sections of hair with hair spray before curling. When your curls are cool and set, flip your hair upside down and tousle gently for volume. Boom! You have hair that will keep all eyes on you!

Book a Blowout

Want the volume without the curl? Book a blowout with your favorite stylist or do it yourself. Apply a leave-in conditioner to damp, clean hair. Comb through with a wide tooth comb, and spritz on a volumizer/heat protectant. Blow hair dry upside down, focusing on the roots, until hair is about 80% dry. Then, section the hair and gently pull a large-barreled round brush through each section while focusing the dryer on the brush. Take your time and ensure that your hair is fully dry for the best results.

How to Build a Skin Care Routine that Fits Your Needs

How to Build a Skin Care Routine that Fits Your Needs graphic

Skin care can seem overwhelming. There’s a huge assortment and array of skin care products available and choosing the right one may seem daunting. To help you in your decision making there are a few questions you should ask yourself before choosing the product and routine that is right for you. What will work best for your skin? How many products do you need to work into your routine? What order should you use them in?

Don’t panic! There are three essential steps you want to focus on when choosing a basic skin care routine including cleansing, moisturizing, and applying sunscreen. Of course, you can add more to cater to your specific skin concerns. Whether you have dry, oily, combination or sensitive skin, you may need to experiment a bit to see which products and skin care regimen work best for you. Here are our tips to incorporating a basic skin care routine into your life to get healthy, radiant skin.

Cleanse

Cleansing is an essential step to remove dirt, oil, and bacteria from your face and to prevent acne. Just don’t overdo it. A quick cleanse first thing in the morning and before bed is recommended. People with oily skin should look for water-based cleansers, while everyone else may benefit from an oil-based cleanser, especially those with dry skin. New cleansing balms are particularly effective, gentle, and good for removing makeup.

Exfoliate

Exfoliating is removing the dead skin cells from the outer layer of your skin using physical or chemical exfoliants. Incorporating this essential step into your skin care routine can help you achieve brighter, smoother skin. It is important to know that you don’t want to exfoliate every day as it can be drying or irritating for your skin. If you have oily or combination skin, you may want to exfoliate two or three times a week, but those with dry skin should only exfoliate about once a week. If you have sensitive skin, you may want to skip exfoliation all together, or just do it occasionally with a gentle exfoliant.

Repair

If your skin needs repair, we recommend using serums, which are concentrated products that can address and help address specific skin issues. For example, you may want to use a vitamin C or antioxidant serum if you are concerned with hyperpigmentation or signs of aging. There are numerous serums available for different issues (hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides, etc.), so explore which works best for you. Helpful tip: Water-based serums should be applied before moisturizer; oil-based serums should be applied after.

Moisturize

Even people with oily skin should use moisturizer every day. Moisturizer protects the skin barrier from irritants and environmental damage and keeps your skin healthy and soft. Be sure to get a moisturizer that’s right for your skin type. Typically, lighter lotions for oily skin and thicker creams for dry skin.

Protect

Finally, don’t forget the sunscreen! Go for an SPF of at least 30 and use it every day without fail. (Be sure to apply it on your neck and ears too.) Mineral-based sunscreens are best for those with sensitive skin to avoid irritation. Sun exposure can speed up the aging process and cause skin cancer, so this step is essential.

Career Paths for Skin Care Professionals

Career Paths for skin care professionals graphic

If you’re interested in skin care, ready to join the beauty industry, and are passionate about helping people look and feel their best, you should consider a career as a skin care professional. With  hands-on training in a Skin Care Specialty Program from an accredited school, like Shore Beauty School, you’ll have an opportunity to explore various career paths available to use the skills you learn in facial massage and treatments, makeup techniques, and body treatments. Here are possible career paths you can consider to get you started.

Facial and Skin Care Specialist

Skin care specialists give facials, full-body treatments, head and neck massages, as well as exfoliating treatments like masks, peels, and scrubs. They may also apply make-up and teach clients how to best care for their skin. Facial and skin care specialists typically work in spas or salons.

Makeup Artist

Makeup artists help people look their best for weddings, proms, fashion shows, photography sessions, galas, and other special events. They can also look to careers in the theatrical or film makeup industry, sometimes using special effects, prosthetics and more to create special characters.

Aesthetician

Aestheticians understand different skin types, recognize common skin issues, and provide a range of treatments for their clients including facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, light treatments and more. These skin care treatments can address different issues such as aging skin, acne, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and redness. Aestheticians often work in med spas or wellness facilities, as well as regular salons and spas.

Skin Care Product Sales

A skin care sales representative works for a specific skin care brand, store, or a product manufacturer, and works directly with potential customers to help drive sales. If you work in skin care sales, you need to be outgoing, fully understand the products you’re selling, know what works best for different skin types, and be able to provide helpful advice and recommendations. You may sell products directly to consumers, or to aestheticians, dermatologists, and retail stores and salons.

Skin Care Instructor

Once you’ve received the proper training in skin care services and have gained some real-world experience, you may want to share your skills and knowledge with students as a skin care instructor for a beauty school like Shore. It can be very satisfying to see people you’ve mentored become the next generation of skin care professionals.
