How to Maintain and Care for your Beard

How to Maintain and Care for your Beard

How to Maintain and Care for your Beard

Many men, at some point in their lives, decide to grow a beard. Knowing how to maintain and care for that beard can make all the difference between looking sophisticated and sexy to looking like you were raised by wolves. The good news is that growing a beard and caring for it is not hard, and with a few simple tips, you’ll be looking and feeling your best.

Let it grow, let it grow!

Step one for growing a beard is leave it alone. Don’t shave, don’t try to shape or style it. Just leave it untouched for 4 to 6 weeks. After that, your beard should have grown in evenly and will be long enough to work with.

Visit your barber

At this point, it might be a good idea to enlist some expert help. A good barber can help you pick the right style and length of beard for your face shape and do the initial shaping. Once you find a look you love, you’ll just have to maintain it.

Keep it trimmed

Remember that your beard and mustache are always growing, so you’ll need to invest in a good beard trimmer and a pair of grooming scissors to keep everything under control. Also note that the shorter the beard style you choose, the more often you’ll need to trim it to keep that tight style.

Shampoo and condition

When you shower, be sure to wash and condition your beard just like you would the hair on your head. Since the skin on your face is more sensitive than your scalp, you may want to consider a beard wash/conditioner for a little extra TLC.

Tame unruly facial hair

If your beard hair grows neatly downward, consider yourself lucky, as for others, it may stick out or be rebellious. Once your beard is completely dry, smooth on a few drops of beard oil to soften the hair and use a beard comb to gently remove tangles. You may also want to try a beard pomade or mustache wax to help create and maintain the shape you want.

Benefits of Becoming a Barber

Benefits of Becoming a Barber

If you love the idea of mastering trending haircut techniques like a taper, fade, or undercut, and enjoy helping people look and feel their best, now is a great time to enroll in a Barbering Program.  Whether you want to gain the technical skills for a career in barbering or plan on eventually owning your own barber shop, Shore Beauty School can help put you on the path to reach your full potential.

Gain lifelong skills

When you train to become a barber, you’ll learn all the latest hair cutting techniques and use a variety of barbering tools to master the coolest styles and trends. Barbers take great pride in the tools of their trade, working with scissors, shears, thinning shears, clippers, trimmers, and straight razors to create the best look for their clients. You’ll also learn techniques for shaving, hot towel treatments, fades, and honing and stropping a razor. Once you’ve gained those valuable skills, you’ll have them for the rest of your life. If you practice, stay up on the latest trends, continue to use the right tools and develop your talents, you can attract a list of loyal customers.

Enjoy flexibility and freedom

One of the great things about being a barber is that your skills will always be in-demand. Almost everyone has hair that needs to be cut regularly. That means you can work and live wherever you want. And usually, barbers can set their own schedules, so there’s no 9 to 5 daily grind. This gives you flexibility and freedom that many careers don’t offer.

Do hands-on work

If the idea of sitting at a desk in an office all day does not sound appealing, you prefer working with your hands, staying active and on your feet, and getting to meet new people, a hands-on career in barbering could be perfect fit for you. Plus, you’ll get the satisfaction of seeing the results of your work right away.

Let your outgoing personality shine

Barbering is one of the few professions where you can talk and socialize with different people all day long, establish great friendships, and become a part of the community. If you are a people person and love learning about others’ lives, being a barber can be very rewarding.

Make people happy

As a barber, you’ll help your clients look and feel their best with a fresh new haircut or shave. Additionally, if you’re a good listener, your clients may come to you to talk out their problems or just to enjoy a friendly chat. If you enjoy connecting with people, a career in barbering might be perfect for you.

Barbering or Cosmetology? Which Program is Right for You?

Barbering or Cosmetology? Which Program is Right for You?

If you love the idea of helping people look and feel their best, you should consider going to an accredited beauty school to gain the skills you need to succeed. But should you enroll in a Barbering Program or a Cosmetology Program? Let’s explore the differences between them so you can choose the path that’s best for you.

What You’ll Learn

Both barbering and cosmetology programs will teach you how to cut and style hair. At Shore Beauty School, our Barbering Program will teach you haircutting and styling using scissors, clippers and razors. In addition, you will also learn techniques for shaving, hot towel treatments, fades, and honing and stropping a razor.

Our cosmetology program, on the other hand, covers a wider range of beauty skills. A comprehensive program includes coursework on cutting, styling, coloring hair, performing chemical treatments (keratin treatments, perms, etc.), as well as facials, skincare, makeup, hair removal, manicuring, pedicuring, and more.

Career Opportunities

Those who take a barbering program usually go on to become…you guessed it…barbers, either working at a barber shop or a salon. Many students who take this path are interested in opening their own barbershop, or even becoming a barbering instructor, which would require further education and licensing.

Cosmetologists again may have a wider range of possibilities, working in salons or spas, and can work as a hair stylist, colorist, nail technician, skin care specialist, makeup artist, and more, as well as a salon owner/manager or instructor.

How Long it Will Take

Because cosmetology is a more comprehensive program than barbering, it tends to take longer to get your degree. For example, at Shore Beauty School, our  Cosmetology Program consists of 1,200 hours of instruction and hands-on training vs. 1,000 hours for our Barbering Program. Either program will help you get into the workforce much quicker than if you pursued a 4-year college degree, but if you know you want to become a barber, the more focused program will get you through school faster.

Whatever path you choose, Shore Beauty School can help you gain all the skills you need to find a career that you truly love. Check out our Cosmetology Program or Barbering Program to learn more.

Tips to Opening your Own Spa, Salon or Barbershop in 2022

Tips to opening your own spa, salon, or barbershop in 2022

Tips to Opening your Own Spa, Salon or Barbershop

You’ve worked hard to develop your skills in the beauty industry, and now it’s time to take those skills to the next level by creating your own beauty business. Whether you are interested in opening a beauty salon, spa, barbershop, or any other beauty/wellness establishment, there are some important tips you should follow to put you on the path to success.

Write a Business Plan

You have the drive and the passion to start your business, but do you have a plan? A detailed business plan not only provides you with a roadmap for structuring, running, and growing your new spa, salon or barbershop, it also can help you acquire funding or bring on investors or business partners. Check out the U.S. Small Business Administration’s helpful guide to writing a business plan to get started.

Run the Numbers

It’s important to take a realistic look at how much money it is going to cost to establish your business and keep it running. Those costs include things like rent, training, insurance, equipment, inventory, staffing and more. Understand that with the upfront and operating costs, it may take months or even a year or more before you’ll be able to turn a profit. Figure out what you are going to charge for your products and services based on industry standards, and consider talking to a financial planner or seeking a small business loan if you need help getting started.

Know the Rules and Regulations

This is the more tedious side of the business, but you’ll have to learn what is required of you to run a business in your county/state. Most businesses are legally required to have insurance, and there are a number of types of insurance that may be required for your business. Additionally, you’ll need to get a business license, secure beauty licenses from your staff, arrange for a health and fire marshal inspection of your workspace, and more.  Do some research and prepare yourself for what is needed.

Find Your Place and Your People

You’ll need to determine the right location for your new salon space. If you want to keep the clients you already have from an existing job, you’ll likely need to find a space relatively close by, so those clients won’t have to drive far to stay with you.  Also, try to rent a space that you can grow into, but not so large that you are paying for wasted space. Finally, take your time choosing your employees, as the right staff can make or break your business.

Once you’ve established your business, look for creative ways to market yourself and spread the word.

If you dream of someday opening your own beauty business, Shore Beauty School can help you make that dream come true. We offer Cosmetology, Barbering and Skincare programs that can put you on the path for a future in the beauty and wellness industry, as well as our Shear Success program which teaches business fundamentals. Schedule a virtual tour today, contact us to learn more or give us a call at (609) 645-3635.

Why a Barbering Career is Right for You

Why A Barbering Career Is Right For You

If you’re outgoing, friendly, creative, and enjoy working with your hands, you may want to consider pursuing a career as a barber. There are lots of great reasons that a barbering career could be right for you, read on to find out more!

Gain Lifelong Skills

Barbering is a craft that you can learn and develop throughout your life. When you train to become a barber, you’ll learn skills like haircutting with scissors, clippers and razors, popular styles like fades and tapers, and shaving techniques. You’ll also learn business skills like customer relations, sales and marketing, and how to eventually run your own shop. As long as you practice and stay on top of the trends, you have the potential to succeed in the barbering industry.

Make a Good Living

As you gain experience and improve your craft, you may be able to grow your client list as word-of-mouth spreads. If you’re great at what you do, you could gain a loyal following who will return to you regularly for years to come and refer you to others. Someday, you may even be able to own your own barber shop.

Work Anywhere

Barbers can work with their skills anywhere. Whether you want to work in small town America, a big bustling city, on the East Coast, the West Coast, or anywhere in between, opportunities for barbering jobs are everywhere. Work where you want to live, and live the life you’ve dreamed about.

Let Your Personality Shine

Since barbers spend most of their time talking and listening to their clients, it helps to have an extroverted, confident, and fun personality. Let’s face it – people can go to many places to get their hair cut, but if they like you and enjoy being around you, they are more likely to come back. If you thrive around others and are good at making them look and feel better about themselves, barbering may be your ideal career.

Enjoy Flexible Hours

Most barbers don’t work a typical 9-to-5 Monday-through-Friday schedule. You may have the opportunity to set your own hours, but they will likely be when your clients are available, which means you may end up working evenings or weekends instead of a standard workday. Barbers often have a say in when they work, freedom that not all jobs offer.

If you think that barbering sounds like the perfect career for you, Shore Beauty School can help you get there.  Check out our Barbering Program and get the hands-on skills and experience you need to potentially become a licensed and successful barber. Why Barbering Will Always Be Around

Why Barbering Will Always Be Around

Hair never stops growing… the craft of barbering historically seems to be time and recession-proof. While you may think the barber is old school and on the way out, the opposite is actually happening. It’s becoming more and more common in urban areas to see barber shops popping up with a whole new generation of younger clientele. If you’re wondering why, consider some of the reasons we think the world of barbering is here to stay!

  1. When your tools of the trade are so portable like clippers and shears, your career can send you just about anywhere. From working around your town to traveling with a sports team, nothing is off limits. When you’re a great barber, there can be work for you wherever you go. That’s never going to be out of style!
  2. In the military, a haircut is not optional – it’s a regulation that most serviceman must abide by. So, choosing to work on a base is one of the most reliable barber jobs you can have! Not only is it a great way to stay in business, it’s a chance to give back to service members in your own special way by making sure they always look sharp for inspection.
  3. When you can trust someone with your hair, you can trust them with anything. A lot of men and women go to the barbershop, not just for a great cut, but to talk to their barber about pretty much anything. Women aren’t the only ones who need to vent sometimes, men do too! But don’t worry, what’s said in the shop, stays in the shop.
  4. With the popularity of social media, it seems like there’s a new trend appearing every day. You’re going to need a good barber to help you keep up and get those perfect selfies!
  5. Barbering isn’t just a man’s game anymore. Women are making great contributions to the barbering trade. And they might just have the inside scoop on what ladies like. Call it women’s intuition but if we’re all in this together, it’s a trade that isn’t going anywhere.

As a barber, you’re an artist. Your shears are your paintbrush and your client – your canvas. Creating new looks and making clients feel great about themselves feels pretty great. And every man should have that go-to professional helping them look good from the top of the head to the tip of their beard! If this sounds like something you could wrap your clippers around, check out the barber programs in your local area. There are plenty of opportunities to go around so contact your local state licensing board to learn more about how you can shave and trim your way to a bright future!
