How to Become a Hairstylist and Open a Salon

Become a hairstylist and open a salon

If you’ve dreamed of becoming a hairstylist and someday owning your own salon, it’s time to put yourself on the path towards making that dream come true. Working as a hairstylist and helping people to look and feel their best can be a very rewarding career, and, if you have an entrepreneurial spirit, owning your own salon can be an exciting way to take your career to the next level – giving you freedom and control over your own business.

Get the Training You Need

To start with, you’ll need to gain the skills and knowledge you’ll need to succeed, by enrolling in a Cosmetology & Hairstyling program through an accredited school like Shore Beauty School. Shore also has a renowned beauty clinic where you can gain real-world experience, further develop your technical skills, speed, confidence, and professionalism by working with actual clients.

Learn Business Fundamentals

Shore also offers Shear Success Business Fundamentals, a supplemental program that teaches you the foundation of building a business, including creating a book of clientele, networking, marketing, client management, and ways to maximize your earnings.

Make a Business Plan

Once you’ve graduated and have passed your licensing exam, you may want to start working at a salon to gain some experience before starting out on your own. When you’re ready to start your own business, the first step is always to write a solid business plan, as well as considering costs (how much you will need to get started, how much to charge, how much business you will need to do to keep the salon running and profitable). You may also need to consider taking out a small business loan or looking for an investor to help you get started. If done well, your business plan can help you secure a loan or investor.

Salon Start-up Checklist

Here are some of the key steps you’ll need to consider when opening your own hair salon. You’ll need to:

  • Choose your legal structure.
  • Register your salon business and its name.
  • Choose a location to rent or buy.
  • Get a license to operate.
  • Get insurance.
  • Choose suppliers.
  • Purchase the equipment, salon furniture, and supplies you’ll need.
  • Hire your staff (receptionist, stylists, nail techs, etc.).
  • Train your new hires.
  • Start booking and marketing.

It can be a lot of work, but if you are passionate about owning your own business and love the beauty industry, it can definitely pay off.

Holiday Party Makeup Tips

Holiday Party Makeup Tips

There’s nothing like a holiday party to give you the chance to step up your makeup game. It’s time to look festive, merry and bright. Be bold, add a little sparkle, and get ready to turn heads with these holiday party makeup tips.

Less is More

Just because you want to glam it up doesn’t mean you should be heavy handed and cake on your makeup. Use a lightweight, liquid foundation, and use soft and subtle contouring and highlighting techniques to let your natural beauty shine through.

Get Your Glow On

Achieve luminous, glowing skin by using a dewy moisturizer and setting foundation with a lip balm. Also, consider a cream blush and a dusting of shimmery highlighter on the tops of your cheekbones.

Create Smokey Eyes

The holidays are the perfect time to add some drama with smokey, sultry eyes. Try a creamy metallic shadow in your favorite hue. Then, simply line the upper and lower lash lines with a kohl pencil. Lastly, use an eye brush to blend out the lines for instant impact.

Don't Forget Your Brows

While the days of over-tweezed, pencil-thin eyebrows are over, you definitely want to remove stray hairs, and fill in any sparse areas to give your brows definition and fullness. If you find it difficult to get an even look, there are brow stencils and stamps that can help guide you.

Do a Matte Red Lip

Create some Hollywood glamour at your next holiday gathering by going with a bold, matte lip. Experiment with a classic red, bright berry, or a deep burgundy in a long-lasting formula.

Curly vs. Straight Hair: Maintenance Tips for Both Textures

Curly vs. Straight Hair: Maintenance Tips for Both Textures graphic

Whether you were born with naturally curly hair, straight hair, or something in between, you’ve likely experienced some uncontrollable hair days from time to time. To make the most of your natural hair texture, you need to use the right products, styling tools, and maintenance tips to truly shine. Here are some helpful tips for bouncy, frizz-free curls or shiny, straight locks.

Curly Hair Tips

Curly hair tends to crave moisture, that’s why when it’s humid out and there is a lot of moisture in the air, curly hair tends to frizz. The hair shaft opens to soak in all that hydration. To minimize frizz and get more perfectly formed curls, you need to follow a routine to moisturize your hair and minimize damage. Here is a recommended routine to get the most out of your curls.

  • Wash your hair with a co-wash or sulfate-free shampoo. Don’t wash it too frequently.
  • Scrunch a handful of conditioner through your hair until it feels fully coated and slick, and then detangle with a wide-tooth comb.
  • Rinse out most, but not all, of the conditioner. Then scrunch a handful of curl enhancing leave-in cream throughout your wet hair.
  • Squeeze the excess water out of your hair with a cotton T-shirt and let air dry.
  • Avoid brushing or combing your curls after they are dry. Scrunch with your hands for curl definition, or gently rake with your fingers to loosen curls that are too tight.
  • Avoid using a blow dryer or hot tools on your hair if possible. If you must use a blow dryer, use a diffuser.
  • To extend the life of your curls, put your hair in a high, loose ponytail on the top of your head when you sleep at night.

Straight Hair Tips

Straight hair is more likely to be oily and attract dirt, which can weigh hair down and make it fall flat. To get the style technique and shine you love, follow these straight hair tips.

  • Wash your hair every other day with a sulfate-free shampoo. You may also want to use dry shampoo on your days off to absorb oil at the roots.
  • Be cautious with conditioner. Choose a light formulation that won’t weigh your hair down, and never apply it to your roots or scalp.
  • Create volume with a texturizing spray and blow dry your hair upwards from the roots. You can also add volume by having your stylist add some layers to your cut.
  • Fight frizz with a dry oil or serum.
  • As you finish blow drying your hair, blast it with some cool air to help set your style and add shine.
  • Consider sleeping on a silk pillowcase to retain your style overnight.

Trending Fall Hairstyles You Need to Try

Trending Fall Hairstyles You Need to Try

Looking for a new haircut or style for Fall? As we move into sweater weather and all things Pumpkin Spice, it’s a great time to change up your look and try a new hairstyle. The question is what hairstyle should you try? To help you decide we created a list of some of the top hairstyle trends this Fall. Go ahead and pick your favorite, grab some inspirational pics off Instagram, and go talk to your stylist!

Lobs & Bobs

Face-framing bobs, which are usually around chin length and long bobs, also called lobs are above or at your shoulders, are always a popular choice come Fall. You can cut down on some of your length if it is damaged or weighing you down, save time on maintenance, and look stylish and chic all at once! Often paired with curtain bangs and featuring textured waves, lobs and bobs are on trend and effortless.

70’s Layers

This Fall is all about layers and texture and it’s really taking us back to the 1970s! It is amazing how styles come back and become trending again years later. Check out some old pics of celebrities that have rocked this retro style, like Farrah Fawcett or Goldie Hawn with their big hair and feathered layers.

Mixies & Bixies

For those who really want a change, there are now two different takes on the popular pixie cut. The Mixie is part pixie, part mullet, which is shorter in the front, party in the back. The Bixie is part pixie, part bob with longer layers that frame the face.

Birkin Bangs

While curtain bangs are still having a moment, Birkin Bangs are hot for Fall. Inspired by Jane Birkin, a 60s style icon who lived in Paris, these chic, effortless and breezy bangs fall just above or below your brows and are cut softly with no sharp line.

Butterfly Cut

The butterfly haircut, which has gone viral on TikTok, is typically done on longer hair and features lots of blended layers and feathering. Shorter layers on the top of the head, through the crown, and around the face add lots of volume to this style. The name comes from the idea that this trending styles somewhat resembles butterfly wings.

Hot Fall Hair Trends

Cooler temperatures, blazing color all around us – yes, Autumn is almost here and it’s time to talk about the hot fall hair trends. Trying to keep your hair game strong? Check out some of the fun, funky, and fabulous options this season has to offer.

Please crimp my style

The good old crimping iron has made a comeback! We love it! Long, crimped locks are showing up on runways and red carpets everywhere.

Head gear

Headbands and scarves of all kind are a total go-to this fall and are the perfect accessory to add some warmth to your look. Let’s face it. The colors and options are endless!

Caramel latte

It’s not just for coffee anymore. This fall is bringing a deliciously warm caramel hair color to the heads of celebs and fashionistas everywhere.

Barrettes & bows

Both classic accessories add a feminine flair to a look. A long, loose ponytail tied with a long, black velvet bow lends an ultra-elegant feel. If you prefer an edgier vibe, multiple chunky barrettes can make the right statement.

Plumped up pixies

The cute pixie-cut makes a bigger impact when you turn up the volume a little. Adding some texture to this style is easy and we love the result!

Braids in all forms

A fishtail braid, braid on each side of your face, French braid down the middle of your back, braided bun, or braids twisted into a crown are all hot for this fall. We still love all things braids! Why not? The options are endless!

Sleek and slick

The slicked back, sleek look is still center stage this season and can be paired with an equally slick ponytail or loose waves.

Ballerina bun

Buns are like braids in that the options are plentiful. This season’s bun of choice is the neatly put together ballerina bun. For a more feminine touch, accessorize with a jeweled clip or a flower or two.

With so many options, how is a fashion forward fan of style to choose? The good news is that this year’s hot fall hairstyles are pretty user friendly. Why not try them all? If experimenting with style is something you get excited about, you might be the perfect fit for a career in the beauty industry! Skin Care Tips for Warm Weather

warmer wather dresses
Let’s face it – we all want gorgeous, radiant skin. In the summer, we want it even more. Summer heat and humidity creates challenges that can make it harder to get healthy, glowing summer skin. Fortunately, there are some simple things you can do to keep your skin looking and feeling great whether it’s 9 degrees or 90!
  1. Protection for your reflection
  2. Let’s start with the most important skincare tip that applies in any weather. Sunscreen is your #1 priority. Use a SPF 30 sunscreen every day, no matter what the temperature is. If you’re in the direct sun for extended periods, reapply it often. Harmful UV rays are harmful regardless of the weather.

  3. It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity
  4. How many times have you heard someone say that? When it comes to your skin, humid weather requires a different response, especially if your skin is oily. Cleanse your face regularly with a gentle cleanser and toner to avoid clogged pores and breakouts. You can also use a glycolic pad to eliminate excess oil and keep your face looking fresh.

  5. Hydrate inside and out
  6. Dry heat can cause your skin to get red, flaky and dull. Trade your normal moisturizer for a richer, heavier moisturizing cream to give your skin that boost of hydration it’s missing. Since our bodies are mostly water and skin is our largest organ, hydrate it from the inside too! Drinking tons of water will not only help you keep your skin radiant-looking, it will keep your whole body healthier.

  7. Just scraping the surface
  8. Exfoliating your skin regularly helps remove dead, dull skin cells and can help prevent breakouts by unclogging your pores. Make sure you apply a good moisturizer and be diligent about sunscreen after exfoliating. Your skin will be more sensitive will need extra protection.

Get the most out of your summer and do it with healthy, glowing skin. If you’ve got a passion skincare, you might want to consider turning that passion into a career! If you’d like to learn more about a career helping people look and feel their best, contact your local state licensing board for a list of schools in your area.

Top Summer Wedding Hair Trends

Summer wedding trends a young bride in a gown and up-do hairstyle

A summer without weddings is like the 4th of July without fireworks. It wouldn’t be the same without them. Whether you’re in the wedding or a guest there to witness the big day, you’re going to want wedding hair that doesn’t require walking down the aisle to turn heads. Not to worry! We’ve got some great looks for this summer’s wedding season that will do the trick!

Every kind of up-do

We know there are a ton of variations to choose from here but for purely practical reasons, an up-do is great for a summer wedding. What better way to tame frizz and fight the sweltering heat than to pull it off your neck? A sleek topknot, a romantic side-swept chignon or a low-braided bun are all great options. Weave in some colored ribbon or accessorize with a bejeweled barrette for a little more glam.

Not your average pony

Ponytails just feel like summer. But for a wedding? Yes! Especially if you have long hair and are rocking a dress with gorgeous back details. A high ponytail curled with just a bit of loose wave is pretty and perfect!

Mermaids love weddings

Maybe the most romantic hair ever! Long, flowing waves over the shoulders, with pieces pulled back slightly on each side and secured with an eye-catching accessory.

Sleek, slick waves

A throwback to old Hollywood glam, slicked back waves parted on the side do double-duty of fighting frizz and looking fabulous! This look works well on pretty much most hair lengths.

The best accessory for any occasion is confidence. So, whatever hair you decide to rock, don’t be afraid to have a little fun with it. If your idea of fun is creating signature hair that rocks, you might be perfect for a career in cosmetology! Seriously, can you think of a more awesome way to earn a living than doing something you love? For more information on a career in cosmetology, contact your local state licensing board for a list of programs and schools near you.
