Holiday Party Makeup Tips

Holiday Party Makeup Tips

There’s nothing like a holiday party to give you the chance to step up your makeup game. It’s time to look festive, merry and bright. Be bold, add a little sparkle, and get ready to turn heads with these holiday party makeup tips.

Less is More

Just because you want to glam it up doesn’t mean you should be heavy handed and cake on your makeup. Use a lightweight, liquid foundation, and use soft and subtle contouring and highlighting techniques to let your natural beauty shine through.

Get Your Glow On

Achieve luminous, glowing skin by using a dewy moisturizer and setting foundation with a lip balm. Also, consider a cream blush and a dusting of shimmery highlighter on the tops of your cheekbones.

Create Smokey Eyes

The holidays are the perfect time to add some drama with smokey, sultry eyes. Try a creamy metallic shadow in your favorite hue. Then, simply line the upper and lower lash lines with a kohl pencil. Lastly, use an eye brush to blend out the lines for instant impact.

Don't Forget Your Brows

While the days of over-tweezed, pencil-thin eyebrows are over, you definitely want to remove stray hairs, and fill in any sparse areas to give your brows definition and fullness. If you find it difficult to get an even look, there are brow stencils and stamps that can help guide you.

Do a Matte Red Lip

Create some Hollywood glamour at your next holiday gathering by going with a bold, matte lip. Experiment with a classic red, bright berry, or a deep burgundy in a long-lasting formula.

Curly vs. Straight Hair: Maintenance Tips for Both Textures

Curly vs. Straight Hair: Maintenance Tips for Both Textures graphic

Whether you were born with naturally curly hair, straight hair, or something in between, you’ve likely experienced some uncontrollable hair days from time to time. To make the most of your natural hair texture, you need to use the right products, styling tools, and maintenance tips to truly shine. Here are some helpful tips for bouncy, frizz-free curls or shiny, straight locks.

Curly Hair Tips

Curly hair tends to crave moisture, that’s why when it’s humid out and there is a lot of moisture in the air, curly hair tends to frizz. The hair shaft opens to soak in all that hydration. To minimize frizz and get more perfectly formed curls, you need to follow a routine to moisturize your hair and minimize damage. Here is a recommended routine to get the most out of your curls.

  • Wash your hair with a co-wash or sulfate-free shampoo. Don’t wash it too frequently.
  • Scrunch a handful of conditioner through your hair until it feels fully coated and slick, and then detangle with a wide-tooth comb.
  • Rinse out most, but not all, of the conditioner. Then scrunch a handful of curl enhancing leave-in cream throughout your wet hair.
  • Squeeze the excess water out of your hair with a cotton T-shirt and let air dry.
  • Avoid brushing or combing your curls after they are dry. Scrunch with your hands for curl definition, or gently rake with your fingers to loosen curls that are too tight.
  • Avoid using a blow dryer or hot tools on your hair if possible. If you must use a blow dryer, use a diffuser.
  • To extend the life of your curls, put your hair in a high, loose ponytail on the top of your head when you sleep at night.

Straight Hair Tips

Straight hair is more likely to be oily and attract dirt, which can weigh hair down and make it fall flat. To get the style technique and shine you love, follow these straight hair tips.

  • Wash your hair every other day with a sulfate-free shampoo. You may also want to use dry shampoo on your days off to absorb oil at the roots.
  • Be cautious with conditioner. Choose a light formulation that won’t weigh your hair down, and never apply it to your roots or scalp.
  • Create volume with a texturizing spray and blow dry your hair upwards from the roots. You can also add volume by having your stylist add some layers to your cut.
  • Fight frizz with a dry oil or serum.
  • As you finish blow drying your hair, blast it with some cool air to help set your style and add shine.
  • Consider sleeping on a silk pillowcase to retain your style overnight.

Trending Fall Hairstyles You Need to Try

Trending Fall Hairstyles You Need to Try

Looking for a new haircut or style for Fall? As we move into sweater weather and all things Pumpkin Spice, it’s a great time to change up your look and try a new hairstyle. The question is what hairstyle should you try? To help you decide we created a list of some of the top hairstyle trends this Fall. Go ahead and pick your favorite, grab some inspirational pics off Instagram, and go talk to your stylist!

Lobs & Bobs

Face-framing bobs, which are usually around chin length and long bobs, also called lobs are above or at your shoulders, are always a popular choice come Fall. You can cut down on some of your length if it is damaged or weighing you down, save time on maintenance, and look stylish and chic all at once! Often paired with curtain bangs and featuring textured waves, lobs and bobs are on trend and effortless.

70’s Layers

This Fall is all about layers and texture and it’s really taking us back to the 1970s! It is amazing how styles come back and become trending again years later. Check out some old pics of celebrities that have rocked this retro style, like Farrah Fawcett or Goldie Hawn with their big hair and feathered layers.

Mixies & Bixies

For those who really want a change, there are now two different takes on the popular pixie cut. The Mixie is part pixie, part mullet, which is shorter in the front, party in the back. The Bixie is part pixie, part bob with longer layers that frame the face.

Birkin Bangs

While curtain bangs are still having a moment, Birkin Bangs are hot for Fall. Inspired by Jane Birkin, a 60s style icon who lived in Paris, these chic, effortless and breezy bangs fall just above or below your brows and are cut softly with no sharp line.

Butterfly Cut

The butterfly haircut, which has gone viral on TikTok, is typically done on longer hair and features lots of blended layers and feathering. Shorter layers on the top of the head, through the crown, and around the face add lots of volume to this style. The name comes from the idea that this trending styles somewhat resembles butterfly wings.

Back-to-School Beauty Essentials

Back-to-School Beauty Essentials

When it’s time to head back to school, whether in-person, online or a combination, you want to look your best throughout the day and with the least amount of effort. Here are some back-to-school beauty essentials that you can use for a quick fix, and make your classmates turn their heads.

An awesome concealer

Up late studying? Or up early for class? Banish those dark circles with a concealer that brightens and depuffs. Choose one with a cool metal applicator or roller ball to soothe. Bonus trick: keep yours in the fridge for more depuffing power. You’ll look refreshed and awake.

A BB or CC cream

When you are looking for a multi-purpose beauty basic, don’t forget your BB and CC creams. A BB cream, known as Beauty Balm, is a great time saver and often acts as a moisturizer, sunscreen, and light foundation all in one. You’ll look naturally radiant and not overly made up, while protecting and hydrating your skin. A CC cream or Color Correcting cream is similar to a BB cream but offers additional coverage to correct discolorations such as hyperpigmentation or redness.

Dry shampoo

In a rush or just want to sleep in? Good news, you don’t have to wash, dry and restyle your hair every day! That’s what dry shampoo was made for. Spray some dry shampoo at the roots of your hair, let it do its oil-absorbing magic, and brush out. It will extend the life of your latest style, preserve your style, and if you have long hair save you a lot of time.

Oil blotting sheets

If you notice as the day goes on that you’re starting to look a little shiny onscreen, oil blotting sheets are your new BFF. You don’t have to redo, or undo, your makeup. Just simply press a discrete little sheet of paper on your face, and watch any excess oil disappear. Keep them handy in your purse or pocket.

Your favorite (portable) perfume

Love your signature scent, but hate how quickly it fades? Keep a travel sized version of your favorite perfume with you, either a spray, rollerball, or solid version, and feel free to reapply throughout the day, whenever you need a little refresher.

How to Use Your Cosmetology License

how to use your cosmetology license

How to Use Your Cosmetology License

When you get your Cosmetology license, you’ll be ready to pursue a wide range of careers in the beauty industry. First, you’ll need to go through an accredited Cosmetology Program (like ours!) where you’ll learn advanced techniques in hair cutting and styling, hair coloring, chemical treatments, barbering, skin care, facials, makeup, nail technology, and business fundamentals. Then, you’ll be fully prepared to take your state licensure exam and then go on to launch a career in beauty.

Hair Stylist

As a professional hair stylist, you’ll get to use your creative talents to cut, color, and style hair to make people feel better about themselves – you’ll also do keratin treatments, perms and more.

Hair Color Specialist

While hair stylists do color and highlights, a hair color specialist has extensive knowledge of the technicalities of hair color, depth, and tone, and has mastered a range of coloring techniques.

Barber/Barber Shop Owner

You may choose to become a barber or even open your own shop. As a barber, you’ll cut and style hair using scissors, clippers, and razors; shave clients, and offer hot towel treatments.

Skin Care Specialist

As a skin care specialist, you’ll teach people how to care for their skin, address any issues, and recommend what products and treatments should work best for their skin type.

Makeup Artist

There are many different paths you can take if you decide to become a makeup artist. You can do make up for weddings and events, fashion shows and photo shoots, or even theatrical makeup.

Salon Owner/Manager

If you have an entrepreneurial spirit and some business training, you may be able to use your Cosmetology license to become a manager, or even an owner, of a salon.

And More

Cosmetologists work in a wide range of positions – you could also be a manicurist, work in beauty product sales or even teach cosmetology to a new generation of students.

Barbering or Cosmetology? Which Program is Right for You?

Barbering or Cosmetology? Which Program is Right for You?

Barbering or Cosmetology? Which Program is Right for You?

If you love the idea of helping people look and feel their best, you should consider going to an accredited beauty school to gain the skills you need to succeed. But should you enroll in a Barbering Program or a Cosmetology Program? Let’s explore the differences between them so you can choose the path that’s best for you.

What You’ll Learn

Both barbering and cosmetology programs will teach you how to cut and style hair. At Shore Beauty School, our Barbering Program will teach you haircutting and styling using scissors, clippers and razors. In addition, you will also learn techniques for shaving, hot towel treatments, fades, and honing and stropping a razor.

Our cosmetology program, on the other hand, covers a wider range of beauty skills. A comprehensive program includes coursework on cutting, styling, coloring hair, performing chemical treatments (keratin treatments, perms, etc.), as well as facials, skincare, makeup, hair removal, manicuring, pedicuring, and more.

Career Opportunities

Those who take a barbering program usually go on to become…you guessed it…barbers, either working at a barber shop or a salon. Many students who take this path are interested in opening their own barbershop, or even becoming a barbering instructor, which would require further education and licensing.

Cosmetologists again may have a wider range of possibilities, working in salons or spas, and can work as a hair stylist, colorist, nail technician, skin care specialist, makeup artist, and more, as well as a salon owner/manager or instructor.

How Long it Will Take

Because cosmetology is a more comprehensive program than barbering, it tends to take longer to get your degree. For example, at Shore Beauty School, our  Cosmetology Program consists of 1,200 hours of instruction and hands-on training vs. 1,000 hours for our Barbering Program. Either program will help you get into the workforce much quicker than if you pursued a 4-year college degree, but if you know you want to become a barber, the more focused program will get you through school faster.

Whatever path you choose, Shore Beauty School can help you gain all the skills you need to find a career that you truly love. Check out our Cosmetology Program or Barbering Program to learn more.

Latest Beauty Trends for Fall

Latest Beauty Trends for Fall

Who’s excited for fall? It’s time for pumpkin spice lattes, sweater weather, and a fresh new look. It’s time to go back to school or the office and make a fabulous impression. It’s time to get out your makeup, check out the latest beauty trends for fall, and put your best face forward. Here are some of the hottest new looks for fall; find your favorite!

Kitten Liner

Everyone is familiar with the “cat eye” technique that has dominated for the last few years, but it’s a bold look that requires a steady hand. Today’s kitten liner is more subtle and forgiving. This cleaner, daintier version of the classic cat eye is easy to achieve. Start your line at the center of the eye instead of the inner corner, and then use short, thin strokes along the lash line. Finish with a little flick at the end to create a tiny, subtle wing.

Lush Lips

Our mouths have been hidden under masks for a while, so when it is safe to show off your smile, be sure to play up those lips. Lipstick is back and better than ever! Consider a bold, classic red or a deep berry hue, perfect for fall. And while matte color is here to stay, super glossy looks are also making a shiny comeback.

Soap Brows

Natural, full, fluffy brows are in. Over-tweezed, barely-there brows are out. To make the most of your natural brows, try the Instagram favorite “soap brow” technique. Basically, brows are back-combed, fluffed, and styled with a damp spoolie brush, and then a touch of glycerin-based soap is applied to keep the style in place instead of eyebrow gel. A number of makeup artists prefer soap to gel because of its strong hold, simplicity, and affordability.

Jewel-toned Eyes

Make your eyes really pop with rich, jewel-toned shadows and liners in colors like sapphire, emerald, amethyst or burgundy. Keep the rest of your makeup neutral and subtle, and all eyes will be on you.

No-Makeup Makeup

Finally, the no-makeup makeup look continues to be on-trend. Show up to your next meeting or social gathering looking radiant and natural, and leave them wondering. Use a moisture balm to create a subtle glow, a touch of neutral eyeshadow, a hint of cream blush, and brush those brows.

Great Career Choices if You Want to Be a Makeup Artist

career choices for makeup artistry

Great Career Choices if You Want to Be a Makeup Artist

Do you have a passion for doing makeup? Would you like to make a career out of it? Fortunately, there are a number of great careers for talented makeup artists including helping brides and bridal parties look picture-perfect on that special day, working in film or theater, or representing a popular beauty brand. Whatever career path you’re interested in taking, Shore Beauty School can help you get there.

Salon or Spa Makeup Artist

Doing your make-up magic in the setting of an all-inclusive salon or spa can provide you with a regular schedule and paycheck, and give you the opportunity to apply make-up on a wide variety of people. You can also help people for many different types of occasions, whether helping a girl look beautiful for her first prom, or doing a make-over on someone who is starting a new chapter in their life, or bride-to-be makeup.

Retail/Brand Makeup Artist

Many great careers in make-up artistry require that you have an aptitude for sales to show off specific products or brands, whether in a mall, salon, or even directly in people’s homes. Retail make-up artists perform makeovers and teach consumers how to use makeup to help them look their best. This position requires detailed knowledge about the products you will sell, as well as a friendly, confident demeanor and the ability to teach effective make-up techniques.

Bridal Makeup Artist

If you love the idea of working with blushing brides and specializing in wedding make-up, becoming a bridal makeup artist might be perfect for you. You’ll likely do most of your work over the weekends or non-traditional hours, but once you build a portfolio of your work and start to market yourself, the wedding industry can be very rewarding. If you have talent, brides will recommend you to other brides and your business may soon take off.

Film or Theater Makeup

Do you have a theatrical flair? Maybe you should consider doing make-up for TV, theater, movies and more. Theatrical makeup tends to be more exaggerated, so people can see faces from the back row, and may also be used to create specific characters. With this career path you can let your creative flair take shape by making people look older, adding scars, using protheses, and more. Special effects makeup (SFX) takes this even farther, turning people into animals, monsters, or fantasy/sci-fi characters.

Beauty Writer/Blogger/Influencer

If, in addition to your makeup talents, you are gifted at writing, photography, or making videos, you could pursue a career as a beauty writer, blogger, or influencer. These positions give you the opportunity to write posts or articles, test and review beauty products, demonstrate makeup techniques, and share your knowledge with others. While it may take time to grow an audience, eventually you may attract the attention of advertisers, sponsors and interested beauty brands.

Do any of these exciting beauty careers appeal to you? If so, Shore Beauty School can help provide the training you need to become a professional makeup artist. Check out our Cosmetology or Skin Care Specialty Program to provide you with hands-on instruction to prepare you for a beautiful career. For more information, contact us today or give us a call at (609) 645-3635.

Tips to Help You Build Your Client List

Tips to help you build your client list

Tips to Help You Build Your Client List

Whether you’re working in a salon, or sharing your beauty skills on a freelance basis, it’s important for beauty professionals like you to work on building your client list and your book of business so you can have a profitable and rewarding career. When you are just starting out, it can be challenging to grow your reputation and have clients lining up for your services. Here are a few tips to help you become a stylist that’s constantly in high demand.

Focus on Your Customer’s Experience

Ensuring a positive customer experience is the most important thing you can do to keep customers coming back and referring you to others. Even if you are amazing at cutting and coloring hair, if your customers feel neglected, ignored or unimportant, they probably won’t return. Be professional, friendly and respectful, keep your appearance and booth clean and neat, communicate clearly every step of the way so clients know what to expect, and most important, listen to their needs. Also, while you should feel free to recommend products that you think would help them, don’t focus on pushing your customers into the product specific buys.

Offer a Rewards Program

Let all your clients know that you are new and building your business, and offer them some sort of rewards program. You can give someone a discount if they refer you to family or friends, or use a punch card to give someone a special offer after a certain number of services with you. This is a great way to get new people coming in and keep them coming back.

Create a Portfolio

A portfolio is the perfect way to show off your skills and let potential clients, and prospective employers, see how talented you are. When you are finished doing a great cut, color or style for a client, ask permission to take photos for your portfolio. They will likely be flattered! You can keep these in an album at your station to display, share on social media or create an online portfolio that you can share and actively promote.

Use Social Media to Your Advantage

Some stylists use social media tools like Instagram to serve as their portfolios, regularly posting photos to build an online following to drive new business. You can also post pics on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media channels, as well as posting special offers, your rewards program, salon promotions, shareworthy reviews, and to highlight special skills or markets, for example updos and wedding styles. Encourage current clients to follow you on social media, frequently post on a regular basis, and soon, everyone will be telling their friends about you.

If you dream about having a career as a hair stylist or other beauty professional, Shore Beauty School can help you realize your dreams.
