Financial Aid Explained

Going to school while trying to juggle work and a personal life all at the same time is no easy task. After all, no one wants to be the poor college student. So naturally, the urge to ask your financial aid office for more money seems like the easiest thing to do. Financial aid* is there to assist you with covering the costs of your education, but that doesn’t always mean that it’s “free money”. What steps can you take in order to have the things you need, without driving your future-self crazy with debt? We’ve some tips on borrowing responsibly.

Only borrow what you need

Getting a refund check for the amount of your financial aid that is in excess of your program cost seems like a great idea, but remember, student loans have to be repaid. Make sure that you are using your financial aid towards educational costs and not your spring break trips. Be wise and prioritize your wants from your needs to spend wisely.

Pay interest on student loans

All student loans have interest. Subsidized loans have no interest while you are going to school at least half time. Unsubsidized loans have interest during all periods of the loan. Any unpaid interest will accrue and be added to the principal amount of your loan. You can choose to pay the interest on the unsubsidized loans while you are in school. By doing this, it will reduce your overall loan balance.

Know your repayment options

The Department of Education offers several student loan repayment plans. Read and research to pick the one best for your circumstances. Standard repayment plan allows you to have a fixed monthly payment for 10 years. You will know exactly what your monthly payment will be every month for the repayment period. Graduated is also paid back over 10 years, but the monthly payment will start low and gradually increase, usually every two years, during the repayment period. With this option you will pay back more in interest than in the Standard repayment plan. There are also repayment options that are based on your income. You can change your repayment plan at any time with your loan servicer for free.

Avoid default

Sometimes life gets in the way and you may fall on hard times, but that does not necessarily mean your student loans go away. If you find that you can no longer afford your student loan payment, contact your loan servicer immediately. You may be eligible for deferment or forbearance that allows you to temporarily postpone or reduce the amount of your student loan payment. By using one of these options, it will allow you to avoid default on your student loans. If you go into default on your student loans, you will not be able to receive financial aid, it will affect your credit score and your wages, as well as your tax refund, may be garnished.

Investing in your future is one of the best things that you can do! In order to set yourself up for the best future possible, you should start making good financial decisions now. Winter Nail Art Trends

And whether you’re down with the frozen part or not, it’s still the season of fun and that means pulling together the hottest looks for this, oh so cool season! Not your ordinary French – While we love the elegant look of pretty French tips, we absolutely adore this warm, Winter take on a classic, that foregoes the white line for a deep crimson paired with another thin metallic or black line. For even more pizazz, add a sprinkling of fine glitter to the darker line for a festive accent.

A rose by any other name – is gold – Rose-gold that is. It’s not just for jewelry or smart phones, it’s a super-gorgeous way to deck out your nails as you deck the halls! Look for rose-gold glitter polish at most of y our favorite retailers.

Foiled again – But in a good, gold-foil way. Especially when it’s gold foil accents carefully placed over a deep, holiday red polish. Rich and glamorous, this look begs to be paired with matching red lips!

Icicle-Princess – Channel your inner “Frozen” princess with delicately pointed and painted icicles at the tips of your nails. This uber-frosty look begins with pale, ice blue polish with icicles hand-painted vertically from one side of your nails to the other, starting at the tip of the nail and stopping about halfway, alternating colors in white, grey and silver glitter in varying lengths.

Winter flannel – It’s not just for lumberjacks and winter jammies – warm, whimsical plaid is a perfect way to show your love of all things winter! Start with a white base, (or any lighter color than the top coat) and carefully paint a plaid pattern checkerboard on each nail, creating every other “square” in diagonal stripes.

It’s that time of the year where you get to explore all your inner demons… and all the other fun and freaky things that make Halloween such a spooktacular holiday. If you’re putting together your perfect ensemble for the big night, don’t forget to accessorize the costume on your fingertips as well. We’ve got some spooky but spectacular ideas to try out on your nails that will make this a Halloween to remember!

Halloween “corn”-ucopia – Who doesn’t love candy corn? To achieve a deliciously fun look, simply paint 3 candy corn colors, (orange, yellow and white or orange, yellow and brown) in 3 equal horizontal stripes across each nail.

Keep your eye on it – Or in this case, 10 creepy little eyes at the base of your cuticles. Paint a tiny white oval with a tiny black circle in the center and outline the circle in the color of your choice for a whole new view of things. If you want to make it a little more ghoulishly girly, paint some thin black lashes across the top of the “eyes”.

Chop chop – Channel your inner Gordon Ramsey of the undead by starting with clear, acrylic press-on nails and using silver metallic polish, paint a small butcher blade down the center and finish with a handle painted in black polish. To go even more creepy, carefully place a few drops of blood on each blade with a deep, red polish.

Make mine ombré – If you thought ombré was just for hair, you’d be wrong. This medley of gradient-like color is perfect for Halloween and can be the perfect finish to your look. Try meshing classic orange and black or different blood shades for an eerily awesome look!

Howl at the moon – Make a little magic this Halloween with 10 full moons! With a black polish base, use a cotton swab dipped in water to swirl grey polish into the moon shape of your choice – half-moon, crescent-moon or the standard full moon, or mix it up and try all three.

Ghosts of Halloween present – What would Halloween be without a little ghostly representation? To get this hauntingly hip look, paint your ghostly shape in white but stop above the cuticle for a floating feel. Paint some eyes and an open mouth with black polish and even give a few of your ghosts some tiny white fangs with a perfectly placed drop of blood to add even more horror to the spectral spectacle!
